Peco Cross Country League

The first Peco race took place on Sunday 12th November at a very misty and cold Middleton Park, Leeds, and a total of 33 Striders turned out to tackle the 4.7mile route over grass and woodland trails. A few days of drier weather prior to the race had resulted in less mud and water than expected, and this helped towards some excellent performances. The results are shown below.
Now we look forward to the second race on December 3rd at Temple Newsam.

The early league tables are attached below:

Senior Entry Information
The PECO Cross Country League is a series of 5 cross country races organised in and around Leeds in which clubs affiliated to the League compete across men's and ladies divisions. Each race is about 4-5 miles.

The only way to enter the race series is to buy a season ticket online in advance for just £18, which provides entry to all five races. Once registered and paid for, you will not need to register again all season. The price of the season ticket will reduce to £10 after race 3 is complete, (ie to include race 4 and race 5). After race 4 the price will reduce to £7 for those entering race 5.

You will collect your season race number from you club representative, either in advance, or at the first race you attend. Then you just turn up to each race with your number and run.

All entrants will be allocated a race number (with timing chip) which they must keep for the whole season. Replacements for lost or damaged numbers can be purchased at Race HQ for £3 for seniors.

RULES FOR ENTRY:
1. The league is exclusive to the clubs that are members of the PECO XC league.
2. All competitors must be paid up members of a club which is affiliated to England Athletics at the time of the race.
3. Club members must be affiliated to England Athletics at the time of the race If you are in any doubt about whether you are currently affiliated to EA, please contact your club membership secretary and/or email bob@pecoxc.co.uk.
4. Affiliated members of non-League clubs may run as guests.
5. Unattached runners are NOT permitted to participate.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO ENTER ON THE DAY, then you will be defined as a "guest" and will not contribute to your team score or individual cumulative points total. Only advance entries will be League "counters".

John Carr 5k May 26th 2024

The John Carr 5K race series, a longstanding tradition hosted by Saltaire Striders for several years, is undergoing exciting changes this year. On May 26th, we will be conducting a series of 5K races throughout the day held at Greenhead Athletics Track in Keighley.

Our first race is reserved for runners with a 5K Personal Best of sub-35 minutes, setting the minimum standard for participation.

As the day progresses, each subsequent race will feature faster runners, culminating with 'elite' athletes in the final race. To ensure a smooth experience, a race schedule will be announced, specifying each runner's start time, allowing them to arrive at the track well-prepared. Spectators are encouraged to join us at any time during the day to witness the thrilling races.

Additionally, we'll have a resident DJ providing music throughout the event, and food and drinks will be readily available.

Feel free to bring your family and friends to provide enthusiastic support. In a particularly exciting feature, the finishing straight will offer a 'Lactate Tunnel of Love,' with four designated lanes for spectators to get up close to the action.

The race will be professionally timed using electronic chips integrated into the race number bibs, enhancing accuracy and competitiveness.

The ultimate goal is to achieve Personal Bests while racing against runners of similar abilities.

Summer trip to Tromso, Norway for the Midnight Sun Marathon and other distances. June 22nd 2024

Stewart Spink is proposing what will be a spectacular trip to Northern Norway for a series of varying run distances. A full itinery and flight details from Manchester will follow shortly.

There are more than 6000 participants from all over the world gathering in the streets of Tromsø to join the celebration that is Midnight Sun Marathon.

Midnight Sun Marathon has been held every year since 1990 in Tromsø, the Arctic capital of Norway located at 69 degrees north. About 350 km north of the arctic circle, most of the city is situated on a small island surrounded by the sea and beautiful mountains.

Northern Norway and the nature here is full of strong contrasts that provide intense running experiences for its visitors. During the summer the sun never sets below the horizon and running under the Midnight Sun is a true bucket list opportunity.

There are five different distances to choose from: Marathon (42,2km), Mizuno Half Marathon (21,1km), Coop Mila (10km), iTromsø Mini-marathon (5km) and SNN Kids Race (500m). The races are open for all and day becomes a festival in town. Many locals gather along the streets of the course to cheer the runners on through the streets of Tromsø.

Club London Marathon Place

We have been allocated one entry to the 2024 London Marathon. Club members who were unsuccessful in the ballot were put into a draw which took place at the AGM.

The winner was Russ MacFarlane, with Alice Kershaw as reserve should Russ be unable to take up his place.

Congratulations to Russ!
Business Cards

We have created a 'business card' to promote our club to hand out to potential new members. The card is available now from committee members and is shown below. We have already had some success in recruiting from these handouts already!
Club Championship-To the end of November

Following the Guy Fawkes and Post Hill races, Tim Mosedale leads the way in the Premier division, but Stuart Dunbar, Helen Love, Martin Fillingham, and Loiuse Nash all have runs in hand to close the gap!
In the first division Ian Storey is well clear of the chasing pack, but Tim Gore, Jenny Shaw and Sue Sroka are hot on his heels.
Anne Preston tops the second by a whopping 95 points but there are a gaggle of runners waiting to pounce with runs in hand.
Too early to speculate on relegation in all divisions, so get those races entered!
Just one race in December, the Auld Lang Syne.

December Race Preview

Just one championship race in December, but boy, is it a good one, the wonderful Auld Lang Syne fell race on New year's eve. This is a very challenging 7 mile off roader starting and finishing on Penistone Hill above Haworth. Definitely one for the mudclaws, particularly the steep descent and climb across the valley and stream. So much fun you do it twice! The route meanders up to the ruin at Top Withins followed by a glorious downhill section before crossing the stream and back to the finish. Fancy dress is encouraged, and is great fun.
The link to enter this race is above.

Winter Fools Relay

If anyone is interested in putting together a team of Striders for the KCAC Gathering Winter Fools relay on December 9th, please comment on the recent Facebook post, or select ‘Attending’ on the Spond app. The club will happily pay the £40 fee if we manage to raise the required team of 8! Each leg is run in pairs with the following distances: 9mi, 9.5mi, 6mi and 7mi.
Club Records
The document above has been given to me by club legend Helen Love, who holds an astonishing 20 club record performances, a remarkable achievement!
Helen's most recent entry into our record books was on the 18th October at the Keighley mile track race in her F65 category in a time of 7:50.
Just goes to show that age is no barrier to being a record holder and breaker.
Have a look at the club records page on the website to see which record you could beat!

The club records are now up to date on the website with as many results as we are able to ascertain.

Track Update

A bit of a different track piece this month. For those of you who know Ali Nash (coach Nash) from his teachings, and beastings, at our weekly sessions, you may not be aware that the man that now runs horrendous off road ultras of mind boggling distances, had a very humble start to his running career not that long ago. Ali's story is written in his own words below:
I could have picked out the photo of me AND Louise buttoned up in one of my shirts , but I went with what I called my 'fat shorts'…they used to be rather snug fitting to say the least (and thank you George at Asda for that elasticated option…) Going back to 2011, it was at a New Years party that a  Wii Fit machine labelled me as obese - which was the last straw….. so for all those folks who assume I was always a runner, you couldn’t be more wrong, the last time I did a cross country prior to 2011 was when I was 15 at school and came second to last 😊 out of over 100. I set out on my running journey soon after and  about 200 metres in  to run No.1 decided I'd better start by walking to build up some fitness and lose some pounds  The first real run I did (beasted by Louise) all the way to Fisherman’s and back from Saltaire -almost 2 miles-  near killed me, and I did have to tell her off more than a few times for leaving me behind and running off at what I saw as an unachievable stupid pace (which was really really slow). I still compare then and now  - and my future ambition to always be ‘marathon ready’….
Park Run with Tim Mosedale

Congratulations to Rob Downes who joined the purple 25 club at Roberts Park parkrun in November - Rob's also been setting sub 25 minutes parkrun PBs in November!  Well done also to Lisa Prosho and Jamie Read for setting their own parkrun PBs.
My Running Journey

I first started this idea with a feature on James Davies a few months ago, which was a moving and inspirational account of why James started running with the couch to 5k programme.
So to get things again, I'm doing one on myself to get the ball rolling. Going forward I'd like to do a feature on a Strider member every month.
The questions and format I've used can of course be altered to suit you, so please give it a go!
All you need to do is e-mail me at davidbower1@hotmail.com. Thank you!

Name: David Bower

Age Category: M60

How long have you been running?: Approximately 16 years

When did you join Striders and why?: Not sure exactly how long, say 6 years. Stephen Hillas introduced myself and Janet and not looked back since! It's a great friendly club

First race and reason?: My wife Janet entered us for a 10k for Cancer research at Castle Howard. From memory my time was around 60 minutes. I gradually took on more races and increasing distances up to the London marathon in 2009

PB's: 5k     21:21 Leeds 2022
        10k     43:38 Bradford 2022
        10m 1:18:55 Eccup 2022
       Half   1:40:32 Brass Monkey 2010
Marathon 3:36:45 New York 2010

Your favourite race/result: Completing the London & New York marathons, a wonderful experience

Your worst race: Don't really have a bad race, but having to go into the medical tent at the end of the New York marathon, with what I later found out was kidney failure. This hospitalised me for 4 days after getting home. Absolutely gutted I felt so ill that it stopped me going out into the big apple post race.

What is the best thing about running?: The challenge of giving your best and being proud of your achievements. I love the atmosphere and competition of races, and that feeling of crossing the finish line, there's nothing like it! You don't have to win or be the fastest (I never will be). The strange thing about getting older, is that I'm actually getting faster!

Goals for the future: To keep fit and healthy and maybe do another marathon!

October Strider of the Month

Stewart Spink. TWO  NOMINATIONS. 1. For arranging the production of the new Soar club vests. Stewart single handedly dealt with everything from start to finish in creating the new vests, even paying out of his own pocket to secure the order. These vests are amazing quality and make race day that little bit nicer!  2. He not only came up with the idea for Day of the 5,000 PB’s as a replacement for John Carr, but he has already organised & booked the event. At the same time he has also researched & found two away trips for June & October 2024.

Congratulations Stewart!

Hullaballoo, Shipley

1)         Apologies for absence

Apologies were received from: Mervyn Silva, Mike Moss, Tim Mosedale, Michelle Ayres, Will Kerr, Andy Brown, Louise Nash, Ali Nash, Barney Lerner, Sue Sroka, Marcus Isherwood, Claire Thaper and Jen Willingham

2)         Minutes of the last AGM 10th November 2022

Were received as a correct record

3)         Election of officers

            Management Committee members:

            Secretary

There had been one nomination, Tim Gore, who was elected unopposed

.            Non Committee Officers:

            Runs organiser

There had been one nomination, Marcus Isherwood, who was returned unopposed.

            Female Vets Captain

At the close of nominations there had been no nomination for Female Vets Captain. It was also reported that the post of Male Vets Captain had become vacant after the time for notice of the AGM. There were no nominations at the meeting and it was agreed that the committee should consider how best to fill these roles at their next meeting. Suggestions were invited.

4)         Treasurer’s Report

The accounts to 31st March 2023, along with the independent reviewer’s report and the notes from the treasurer had been circulated. The chair presented these in the absence of the Treasurer (Tim Mosedale). He noted that some members had been in touch to ask questions direct and offered to answer questions now if possible, and reiterated that the Treasurer was happy to receive any further questions.

Thanks were recorded to Ian Jenkins for reviewing the accounts.

There being no questions at this time the report was accepted.

5)         Chairman’s Report

The chair presented his report for the year November 2022-November 2023. He thanked those who had worked on behalf of the club. Gavin Hamilton for organising club vests, Wendy Hey who had stepped down as Runs Organiser. Andy Brown and Cat Bruckner stepping down as Vets Captains and Alun Griffiths stepping down after 6 years as Secretary. Gifts were presented or will be delivered to those not present.

6)         Membership update and 2022/23 fees

The Membership Secretary (Martin Fillingham) presented an update on membership.  This remained strong with 216 members of which 173 were full EA affiliated members, 9 were second claim members, 30 Non-competitive (Social) members and 4 honorary Members. He noted that the significant numbers of ‘social’ members reflected that even those who did not wish to compete in representative races were keen to be involved in the club.

            Recommendation from the management committee:

That the Membership Fee for the year 2024/25 be £34

The chair reported that England athletics had increased the  individual registration fees by £2.00 and the club registration fee by £50.00 which is why the committee proposed increasing the fees for EA registered members by £2.00. The club would absorb the increase in club fee and non registered members would not be affected. The proposal was accepted unanimously.

7)         Captains’ Address

Stuart Dunbar give the address on behalf of himself and Claire Thaper. He was pleased to see new members joining and becoming involved in the club, bringing new blood. Whilst results last year had not been as good as had been hoped, and we had not been able to get teams to some events he hoped that this would turn round over the next year with new and enthusiastic members. He hoped that all members would set their own targets - whether it was to be a winner, or part of a winning team, or to step up and take part where they might not have done before, or simply to stretch their own personal achievements.

8)         Social Events

The Social Secretary (Stewart Spink) explained his role and highlighted forthcoming events. He indicated that he was hoping to organise 2 club trips; to Tromso in June (the Midnight Sun event) and Bilbao in October.

He also reported that he had taken on the role of organising the successor to the John Carr 5k events which had been on hold since Yorkshire Water withdrew permissions for the use of the Esholt site. This is to be a “Day of the 5000 PBs” to be held at The Keighley track on May 26th, a series of 5k races in a party atmosphere for all abilities.

9)         Club Championship

Stuart reminded members that the club championship year had been moved to April to March to coincide with the membership year. This involved all club members who wanted to take part in any of the races.

The committee will be finalising the races for the 24/25 year in the new year and he invited suggestions for local races that could be considered.

10)       London Marathon Club Ballot Draw

The Secretary (Alun Griffiths) reported that the London Marathon organisers had reduced the numbers of club places available and we were now only entitled to one place.  Twenty two members fulfilled the criteria (ie full members who had entered the national ballot and been rejected)  and had entered the club ballot. The winner drawn by Anthea Griffiths was Russ McFarlane. Alice Kershaw was drawn as a reserve in case Russ was unable to proceed with his entry.

11)       Any Other Business

There was no other items members wished to discuss so the meeting was closed with thanks to all who attended.
