Training News with Louise Nash

MONDAY RUNS AUGUST: The feedback about using the rowing club as a Monday base has been so good we’re extending the trial until the end of August. We’ll return to Caroline Street in September. Sorry the bar area hasn’t always been open – it’s a work in progress, as with all new things. Keep your eyes peeled on social media for info on the HANDICAP CHALLENGE ON 7 AUGUST.

TRACK WEDNESDAYS: if you haven’t tried track yet you probably think it’s just for speedsters, right? Wrong!! Track is for ALL. You run at your own pace, you can’t slow anyone down and you can’t get left behind. Our numbers tend to be smaller in Summer, so it’s the ideal time to give it a whirl. 19.15 every Weds at Carlton Keighley running track. Cost £2.

SHOUT OUT TO OUR RUN LEADERS who give up their time week in week out to lead runs, often stepping in at the last minute when someone can’t make it. This year has been a challenge as we’ve been short on leaders and our groups have grown (which is great!). Things should improve when our new leaders get the thumbs up from England Athletics to start leading. for Our motivation leading runs is almost always “to give something back”. We’re not perfect but we certainly do the best we can. Without our leaders there’d simply be no Saltaire Striders. Thank you leaders!

CLUB COACHES: we can offer individual support with all aspects of running – returning from injury, improving performance, training plans and much more. Talk to any of us: Ewan Gibb, Will Kerr, Ali Nash, Louise Nash. We can match you up with whoever will best meet your needs.

NUTRITION: Strider Izzy Anderson provides one:one consultations and will give club members a 10% discount – contact Izzy direct via her website here: https://www.izzynutrition.co.uk/

Nutrition discounts secured for members as follows: - Mountain Fuel 15% code: Saltaire2215 http://www.mountainfuel.co.uk/ - Kendal Mint 15% code: STRIDERS-2UBpVE (excludes offer, trade, subscriptions, clearance) http://www.kendalmint.co.uk/

Thursday 14th September at Baildon Rugby Club
Club Championship

Two races at the start of the month - the Harrogate 10k and Baildon Canter 5k - mean we are nearly halfway through the 25 race calendar!  At the moment the leaders of each division have raced 5 times, but there's still plenty of time to catch them up.
This month we have two very different races.  This Sunday (6th) is the Round Hill fell race near Otley, which is only £5, entries on the day only, an 8.7 mile tour of Blubberhouses moor. If you want to know more, the Loves have done it more than 10 times between them.  Round Hill Fell Race – Sunday 6th August 2023 – Otley Athletic Club (otleyac.org.uk)
Then on Wednesday 24th is the evensplits 5k at the Brownlee centre, the terrain could hardly be more different, it's probably the smoothest tarmac I've ever run on.  It'll cost you £9 for the race, and is a genuinely fast course if you're looking for a fast time, we've seen lots of the club running PBs here over the years. Leeds 5K Series — Even Splits

Track Update

Our weekly session on the track at Carlton Academy, Keighley continues come rain, sunshine, snow and wind! The content of this changes week to week from our resident coaches Ali and Louise Nash.
It doesn't matter what your ability, this session will definitely help your running whatever you are looking to achieve.
We have a loyal band of tracksters, and it would be great to see more members coming along to join us. The cost is a mere £2! meet at 19:15 for a 19:30 start.

Warm-up, and yes, we can even suspend in mid air!
Park Run with Tim Mosedale

Firstly congratulations to all of the team at Bradford for hosting their 600th parkrun! Lots of striders volunteer there regularly, it's such a shame that I can't get stats on how many of the club have volunteered over that time period, but thank you to everyone that has. I've had a look back at the results of the first Bradford parkrun in April 2010, and recognised 4 current striders on the list - Barney Lerner, Jen Willingham, Rob Boughen, and Chris Reynier.  By contrast 28 striders ran at the 600th!
Two notable milestones on that day were those of Mike Moss, Event Director at Bradford, who ran his 100th parkrun (having already reached 100 volunteers last year); and Martin Fillingham, who was the first full strider to reach 400, a superb achievement and only a couple of years away from a blue tshirt!  (Brief apologies to Ian Ogden, who runs second claim with us, I missed your 400th earlier in the year!).

A total of 12 Striders took part at the Fountains Abbey Parkrun. Thank you Stewart Spink for organising the event and some great results on the 5k Parkrun app.
Also reaching milestone clubs in July were Tom Kay (100), David McGonigle (50), Clare Taylor (50), and Peter Wilkinson (25).  Well done everyone!  Also to Aaron McConkey who was the only strider to run a parkrun PB this month, smashing a whole second off his time at Roberts Park last week.
I've already made you read enough so I'll save a run down of the new events everyone's been going to for their summer holidays until next month.  A quick reminder though, this is a tricky time of year for event teams to find enough volunteers so if you are able to help one of the parkruns out, please do.

June Strider of the Month

Alice Kershaw. Her performance at the 268 mile Summer Spine Race was awesome and a first for the club. As the race reports said, she had a plan and she stuck to it. It’s scary to think of what she might do next.

Relay with Baildon and Ilkley

Our annual relay race took place on Monday July 24th form the Bradford Rowing Club. 21 teams of 4 runners each (13 teams from Saltaire) took to a circular hilly route of 1.78 miles each. This proved to be a very successful event as usual, well organised by Julia Beaumont, Anthea and Alun Griffiths and our own Marshalling team.

The individual and team results are shown on the document below.

There were some fine performances throughout, and special mentions go to Nick Hardy and Josie Cram who were first man and lady, Nick finishing just 4 seconds ahead of the always impressive Tom Adams.
