Burnsall Trip
The annual trip to Burnsall took place on Friday June 16th and was a great success. Travelling by coach our Striders completed a run of varying distances before some having a dip in the river in the hot weather!
Then followed a sumptuous meal at the Red Lion before the return home around 11pm. Full marks to Tracy Foy for organising again!

Relay Relay Relay! - Updated
1) Saltaire vs Baildon 27th July
This is our annual challenge against Baildon Runnners which used to be held at Esholt. We will hopefully be able to use the Rowing club house so will be similar route to last year. Further details to follow.
2) Danefield 4th July
This is one you can enter on the night so if you are interested put the date in you calendar and get a team together, its a great event run round Chevin Country park.
Further details are here:
https://www.fellrunner.org.uk/races/6b078df9-e610-45d1-a431-395a92393981
3) Golden Acre Park 18th July
This is another event we support as a club and last year we had lots of teams. Entry is online via Racebest
https://racebest.com/races/scae5
4) Leeds Country Way 3rd Sept
This is similar to the BMWR but is a full loop around Leeds with 6 stages run in pairs. It would be good to get two teams to enter this.
More details can be found here:
https://kippaxharriers.org.uk/leeds-country-way/
To summarise:
If you want to enter any of the above races that is great, I only need to know names for the LCWR even if you are just interested and not sure whether you can commit. If you want to do the other events but don't have a full team I can try and put you in touch with someone else but you will need to enter your own team.
Thanks

Bradford Millennium Way Relay
Our annual club race took place on Sunday June 11th and was a great success in very hot and testing conditions. 49 teams of 10 runners each entered and took part on the 5 leg, 47 mile course. We fielded three teams, two men's and one ladies, and the results are shown below.
Great credit must go to Anthea Griffiths for her impeccable organisation of a complicated and involved event, and to the army of members who volunteered as marshals at the handover stages, and water stations en-route.
The overall winners were Wharfedale Harriers, with Wakefield Harriers second, and Ilkley Harriers in third. Our 'A' team finished in a very impressive 6th place.

Alice Kershaw
Montane Summer Spine Race 2023
Massive congratulations to our very own Alice Kershaw for her incredible performance in the Montane Spine Race, a brutal 268 mile course starting in Edale, Derbyshire, and finishing in Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish borders. The following text has been taken from the race organisers:
Alice Kershaw has claimed the final podium place on this year's Summer Spine Race, taking 3rd Female.
Alice didn't concern herself with the standings. She came with a plan and executed it expertly. She was consistently strong throughout and had an immensely positive attitude that carried her through any tough times.
Alice's mantra was 'What can I do?'. A perfect reminder in difficult moments that you still have control even when things seem to be going wrong. That you 𝗰𝗮𝗻 turn around a difficult situation even when it feels like things are impossibly stacked against you. And as a consequence of this mindset, Alice seems to have avoided ever allowing this mammoth race to overwhelm her.
Alice also finished 2nd in the Winter Spine Challenger South in January making this her second #spinerace podium of the year, a rare and exceptional performance.

My Saltaire Striders Journey - James Davies
A harrowing and heart warming story
Here is a little bit about myself before I met all the great people at Saltaire Striders
In February 2021 I collapsed at home due to covid and I was barely breathing, thankfully my sister found me in time and I was rushed into hospital, the staff at BRI are saints putting their lives at risk to treat me
The first two weeks I was in ICU not knowing if I would be coming out of hospital, family was only allowed to see me once and that was basically to say goodbye in case the worst happened
Thankfully I got better and stronger, when I was allowed out of bed I could only get about with using a zimmer frame which made me feel about 80
When I came out I couldn't even walk around the block without having to use an oxygen tank, walking stick and having to have a rest
Then just over a year ago I started going to Parkrun where the volunteers and runners were so supportive and kept encouraging me and made me feel part of their family even though it was taking me nearly an hour to complete the course
At the beginning of the year someone at Parkrun told me about Saltaire Striders doing the couch to 5k
I was really nervous the first night I attended the course, even before covid I was never a runner and not knowing anyone made me even more nervous
The first night went really well the one of the first volunteers I met was Reyhana who I knew from Parkrun and she put me at ease
All the volunteers who I told about my Long Covid problems were really helpful and supportive
Then the second week hit me and all my doubts and concerns come in full force
I was concerned about my breathing (or lack of breathing) and being slow, thinking I was going to hold people back having to wait for me
I had decided to quit after that session but at the last minute I decided to give it one more try. After the third week I found it slightly easier and saw that the volunteers and other runners didn't mind that I was slower than them
It was great seeing how each week myself and all the other runners were improving and friendships being formed
The day we completed the couch to 5k course and we did the Parkrun I was just hoping to get the time 39.59mins as this seemed unachievable the closest I could do before then was around 43mins
I was so shocked when I got my timing on that day to find out I had done it in 36mins and 9seconds
I have Julia who ran the full course with me encouraging me (basically dragged me around) and all the other Striders and runners on that day for helping me achieve that timing
I even got a hug off Donna which I have been told are pretty rare to add to the congratulations
Since then with everyone's encouragement I have done the Summer Solstice, I was hoping to do it between an hour and 90mins and I did it in 75mins so was overjoyed
I have also signed on for some more races one being next year Summer Solstice and the Run The Lights in Blackpool
I have got Donna, the other volunteers and the other runners to thank for giving me the self confidence to enter these races and making me feel so welcome with the Saltaire Striders, I might be one of the slowest runners but I have never been made to feel like I am a burden
I have made some good friends and my self-confidence and health has increased
Doing the couch to 5k was one of the best decisions I have made and I cannot thank Donna and all the other volunteers enough for running it
Donna Hector writes an additional piece on James as follows:
Every week During the C25K programme, he tried really hard and improved week after week, some weeks he struggled but never gave up. He was challenged to hills, hill sprints, fartlek training, speed training and longer runs and he never moaned and just got on with it. At the summer solstice 5mile, he entered thinking it was a 5k! Until I told him it was a 5mile. On the night and before the race he was really nervous and didn’t think he could do it, but he absolutely smashed it! He’s now aiming for a 10k and entered Abbey Dash. James really is a superstar.

Club Championship
In June we have had 3 club races - the Grimsby 10k say 16 striders make their way to the coast, and we had the Otley 10 on a warm Wednesday evening (with 11 hardy souls) and finally last week the very popular Solstice Saunter, with a whopping 41 striders, more than half scoring their first points of the season.
I was also pretty happy to work out the pro-rated marathon time of Alice Kershaw's epic spine race to give her some points! Do let me (Tim Mosedale) know if you run a marathon or something longer and I'll give you points for it!
Coming up in July we have the Harrogate 10k on 2nd July - only 5 striders entered so chance for good points. We also have one of our closest races, the Baildon Carnival Canter on the 8th.
Well done to everyone who scored points this month.

Park Run with Tim Mosedale
Two months worth of parkrun to catch up with - 8 saturdays to run on, and 4 striders ran all 8 - Ian Jenkins, Frank Masley, and second claimers Ian Ogden and Reyhana Laher.
At this rate Reyhana may be the next to join the 250 club, but that's still going to have to wait until 2024. We do have some new 50 clubbers - James Carlton and Stephen Hillas - and some great parkrun PBs from Ian Dickinson, Laurence Crummay, Sheila Bugg, Stuart Dunbar, David McGonigle, Reece Smith, Lee Casson, and Kerry-Anne Hill. Well done everyone!
I thought I'd have a look at the 62 Yorkshire & Humber parkruns this month, as I've just finished off visiting them all (well over a year since Steve Fowler did the same). Of current striders, I'm not surprised that Bradford (156 of us have run there) and Roberts Park (134) are the most popular Yorkshire parkruns. Horton (89), Myrtle (84), and Cliffe Castle (67) finish the top 5.
One local run I'd recommend that doesn't come very high on the list is Chevin Forest - it's completely different to anywhere else around here and will be cool and shady during the summer.

May Strider of the Month
Martin Fillingham. At God's Own Backyard Ultra - a last person standing event, where participants run 4.167mi on the hour every hour until they drop out... or win - Martin put in an exceptional performance to finish as the Assist for the event - essentially second place. He completed 32 yards, a phenomenal distance of 133.33mi - sending him back to the top of the Striders' Ultramarathon Hall of Fame! And this on his birthday weekend, too!
All previous winners of the Strider of the Month can be found on the club website.
