Training News with Louise Nash

CONGRATULATIONS C25K GRADUATES! a massive well done and welcome to the club – so much good stuff lies ahead! Huge thank you to Donna, Julia and all involved in putting on such a successful programme!

MONDAY RUNS JUNE/JULY: throughout June and July, ALL Monday evening runs will start at Bradford Amateur Rowing Club, over the river from Hirst Wood car park. More info to follow ahead of the first run on 5 June.

INJURY PREVENTION: Thanks all who attended the injury prevention Q&A, we hope you got something out of it. Here are some of our take away messages:

- Avoiding sudden increases in mileage or intensity; be patient - slow steady improvement is usually better in the longer term than quick gains followed by time out for injury

- Listen to your body – know when to do less and don’t be a slave to your training plan (or Strava) if you’re not feeling right

- We’re all individual – do what’s right for you, not for someone else

- Rest is important and often overlooked – get enough sleep and allow sufficient recovery between hard training runs and after events

- Get enough energy (particularly carbs) to fuel your training, plus carbs/protein for recovery

- Plenty of fruit and veg plus Vitamin D for your immune system

- Include some strength work in your routine at least once a week

29 JUNE: ILKLEY RUN – more info on this to follow.

REGULAR TRAINING RUNS: we continue to meet as follows:

- Monday nights during June/July at the rowing club at 19.00 – choice of 3-4 runs.

- Wednesday nights at Carlton Keighley running track at 19.15 – interval training suitable for all or tailored to your needs. Cost £2.

- Thursday nights at Nuffield Baildon at 19.00 – a choice of 3-4 runs.

ALL our regular training nights have runs suitable for ALL members.

Club coaches - our club coaches can support Striders with all aspects of running – returning from injury, improving running form, improving performance, training plans and more. Talk to any of us at training nights: Ewan Gibb, Will Kerr, Alistair Nash, Louise Nash - or message us. We can match you up with whoever will best meet your needs.

Tailored nutrition advice - Strider Izzy Anderson provides one:one consultations and will give club members a 10% discount – contact Izzy direct via her website here: https://www.izzynutrition.co.uk/

Nutrition discounts - we have secured discounts for members as follows: Mountain Fuel 15% code: Saltaire2215 http://www.mountainfuel.co.uk/ Kendal Mint 15% code: STRIDERS-2UBpVE (excludes offer, trade, subscriptions, clearance) http://www.kendalmint.co.uk/

Keep uptodate: training updates/changes are usually shared via our social media platforms – please request to join if you haven’t already:

Couch to 5k

Our Couch to 5k runners completed the Bradford Parkrun to achieve their goal on Saturday May 13th. The programme run by Donna Hector and Julia Beaumont has been a tremendous success. To mark the occasion Saltaire Striders took over the race at which 46 of our runners took part with many others providing marshalling duties. The level of support was phenomenal and was a pleasure to be involved! Many of the C25K 'squad' have now become members, and we welcome them!

Relay Relay Relay!

1) Yorkshire Vets road relays 4th June.

This does coincide with the Grimsby 10K but starts at 2pm and legs are just 5K so still definitely possible to do both! Teams are made up of 3 and you need to be at least 35 to enter. Teams will need to be entered by 28th May.

Further details are here:

 https://www.yvaa.org/event/road-relays-2023/

2) Millenium Way relay (BMWR) 11th June

I currently have about 12 names but it would be good to get at least another team (10 people) This is our own event and we do need marshals etc but there will be a separate appeal for this. If you have already told me you are interested there is no need to respond but if you are interested please reply to Stuart or Claire, (just say yes!)

3) Saltaire vs Baildon  27th July

This is our annual challenge against Baildon Runnners which used to be held at Esholt. We will hopefully be able to use the Rowing club house so will be similar route to last year. Further details to follow.

4) Danefield  4th July

This is one you can enter on the night so if you are interested put the date in you calendar and get a team together, its a great event run round Chevin Country park.

Further details are here:

https://www.fellrunner.org.uk/races/6b078df9-e610-45d1-a431-395a92393981

5) Golden Acre Park 18th July

This is another event we support as a club and last year we had lots of teams. Entry is online via Racebest

https://racebest.com/races/scae5

6) Leeds Country Way 3rd Sept

This is similar to the BMWR but is a full loop around Leeds with 6 stages run in pairs. It would be good to get two teams to enter this.

More details can be found here:

https://kippaxharriers.org.uk/leeds-country-way/

To summarise:

If you want to enter any of the above races that is great, I only need to know names for the BMWR and the LCWR even if you are just interested and not sure whether you can commit. If you want to do the other events but don't have a full team I can try and put you in touch with someone else but you wil need to enter your own team.

Thanks

Stuart & Claire

Trip to Burnsall

SAVE THE DATE: ANNUAL CLUB TRIP TO THE RED LION

Please join us for the annual Saltaire Striders away trip to Burnsall. This year the event will be taking place on Friday 16th June.

All are welcome and invited to attend. And, of course, bring a partner or a friend to join you for the evening - they don't have to be able to run, they can go straight to the pub!

We will get a coach (paid for by the club, more details below) up to Burnsall where there will be three different runs from which to choose (or just head into the Red Lion). Following the runs, there will be the female-only option of using a room in the pub in which to freshen up or the unisex option of a wash in the Wharfe!

Following this will be an amazing five-course meal (details and menu options to follow) in the Red Lion before the return coach home.

All of this for the fantastic price of £32.50 per person!

Park Run Competition with Baildon

There are two Striders remaining in this competition now, in the main draw our skipper Stuart Dunbar has been drawn against Baildon's Greg Hull, Denise Johnson and Sue Coates, who narrowly knocked out Helen Love in a high scoring contest.
In the plate competition there's a straight fight between our own David Bower and Baildon's Mike Baxter. These two were separated by just 0.39% in the last round!

Times for both events must be logged over three weekends, 20th, 27th May and 3rd June.

April Strider of the Month

Donna Hector. For running the very successful C25k group. She was consistently there through the 12 weeks and encouraged everyone between runs on the WhatsApp group. We will have gained several new members (including some who have never run before) of a wide range of abilities from the group and had a successful Parkrun takeover to celebrate.
Congratulations Donna, well deserved!

All previous winners of the Strider of the Month can be found on the club website.

Trial of a new base

Saltaire Striders’ original headquarters was St Bede’s school in Heaton, where runners would often meet for post-run refreshments.  This changed to Esholt Sports Club and, in more recent years, we’ve been homeless.  We manage, but members often say a base would be nice.

An unexpected upside of Will Kerr becoming injured is that he started rowing, established himself within Bradford Amateur Rowing Club, and has negotiated a deal for Saltaire Striders to try the rowing club out as a base for Summer running.

The run leaders met there this week and agreed it could be the perfect Summer base, with great route options and the potential to socialise in the club house post run.  There are changing facilities too.  So we agreed our Monday runs (best night for the rowing club) will switch from Caroline Street to Bradford Amateur Rowing Club throughout June and July.  We’ll make the first Monday of each month a social, so we can enjoy some post-run hydration, fuel and maybe even some laughter.

There’s a car park at the rowing club, or it can easily be reached on foot from either the Upper Coach Road side or over the bridge from Hirst Wood car park.

We’ll provide more info nearer the time and hopefully your run leaders will be able to lead you past our potential new home during some May runs.

PLEASE NOTE: this is a trial for both Saltaire Striders and the rowing club – if it doesn’t work out for either side, we can go back to Caroline Street.  There are no plans to use the rowing club in the Winter, it’s only for light evenings.  Thursday runs will continue to start at Nuffield.

Any queries/concerns, feel free to reply to this email or discuss with another run leader.

Louise Nash Saltaire Striders Coaching and Training Co-ordinator

Saturday/Sunday long runs

There is a closed facebook group Saltaire Marathon, Long Or Short Run Friends for people who are interested in doing some longer runs (e.g. for company for marathon training)  at a steady pace.  The runs are arranged via the group on an ad-hoc basis.  If interested please ask to join the group.
