Training News with Louise Nash
Spring has sprung! And with it lighter evenings – hopefully we can start ditching some layers and enjoy the feel of the sunshine soon! It’s also time to mix things up and get offroad – many of our runs throughout Spring/Summer will be offroad runs. So much more fun! Usually you’ll be ok in either road or trail shoes. I wonder how may trig pics there will be this year? Do share any pics from your training runs – it helps give others a flavour of your runs and might even encourage them to join you!
We’ll also be putting on away runs and we’re hoping to run some handicap style events and offer some offroad workshops and an injury prevention session. The run leaders are meeting at the end of April to plan all this out (a lot to do in not much time!) If you have any great ideas just get in touch: louhiggins79@gmail.com. We’ll consider most things but probably can’t physically do everything, despite our best efforts.
Our beginners C25K programme continues, with over 20 who have stuck with it – kudos to them – and kudos for all of you who are supporting them. It really is heartwarming to see club members pulling together and giving back like this. This programme will culminate in a local parkrun – watch out for details on our club social medical channels, it’d be great if lots of Striders can turn up and cheer them on.
Are you joining us for the Grimsby 10k on 2 June? This event is filling up quickly so sign up soon so that you don’t miss out: ORSTED GREAT GRIMSBY 10KM 2022 - Tape2tape Stewart Spink will be organising transport and social afterwards and will provide more info nearer the time. Janet Bower and I have put together two training plans – plan one for first timers or people currently running less than 15 miles a week, plan two for intermediates. They started on 23 March but you could join in now, you’ll only have missed one week. We’re both happy to help if you need any more advice. These training plans are too large to fit in this newsletter, if you would like a copy, please e-mail me at davidbower1@hotmail.com, or visit our Facebook pages.
Monthly time trials: once a month, usually the first Weds of the month, all Striders are invited to take part in timed heats, split according to pace, of 1600m, 800m and 400m efforts. These are joint with Ilkley Harriers and take place at Carleton Keighley track. To take part just turn up to track at 19.15 (we post info on Facebook and WhatsApp.) Cost £2. Bargain.
Regular training runs: we continue to meet as follows:
- Monday nights at Caroline Street, Saltaire at 19.00 – a choice of 3-4 runs
- Wednesday nights at Carleton Keighley running track at 19.15 – interval training suitable for all or tailored to your needs. Cost £2.
- Thursday nights at Nuffield Baildon at 19.00 – a choice of 3-4 runs
ALL our regular training nights have runs suitable for ALL members.
Club coaches - our club coaches can support Striders with all aspects of running – returning from injury, improving running form, improving performance, training plans and more. Talk to any of us at training nights: Ewan Gibb, Will Kerr, Alistair Nash, Louise Nash - or message us. We can match you up with whoever will best meet your needs.
Tailored nutrition advice - Strider Izzy Anderson provides one:one consultations and will give club members a 10% discount – contact Izzy direct via her website here: https://www.izzynutrition.co.uk/

PECO XC Series
Peco season is now complete, and the final tables are below.
It was a disappointing season for us, with both the Men and Women's teams suffering relegation form the Premier division. There was better news however for the Men's veteran's team who finished 2nd in the Premier division, and the Ladies who came a creditable 8th, also in the Premier division.
There were some outstanding individual performances from the following:
Men
Andy Brown, 25th overall and 1st M50
Martin Fillingham, 34th overall and 3rd M50
Stuart Dunbar, 46th overall and 2nd M60
Ladies
Jen Willingham, 99th overall
Louise Nash, 108th overall
Isabel Anderson, 125th overall
Helen Love, 160th overall and 1st F60

Burnsall Trail Half, Sat 22nd April, SiEntries - Burnsall Trail Half
2023's championship starts with a bang - and the spring weather is tempting us off the roads onto trails and into the hills this month. Baildon Boundary Way and Burnsall Trail are both undulating half marathons, and the Guiseley Gallop is a 10k on Easter day around Esholt woods. The Bunny Runs are very accessible short evening fell races in Haworth as the sun sets, really good fun (and you get a creme egg) - you only need to do one of these to count for the championship.

Park Run by Tim Mosedale
A weather-struck month means only 6 striders ran or walked every week in March, but still a few great achievements. Ian Jenkins, one of our 250 club members, reached 50 volunteers. Pawel Tryc joined the 50 club and ran a sub 22min parkrun PB. Dalvinder Hellawell joined the 100 club, and a few others ran parkrun PBs in March, including Ian Dickinson (parkrun PB after 126 runs!), Stuart Dunbar, and Clare Taylor. Well done everyone!
I've personally been on a couple of tourist trips west and east this month, so I've had a look at new parkruns. 13 parkruns have been visited by a strider this year for the first time. Rachel Parker and Chris Reynier are responsible for most of those all over England & Tasmania, with some nice tourism to Scotland and Amsterdam from Alun, Lee, and Barney. I've got a few new places on my list to visit now!

February Strider of the Month
David Bower. David’s regular week in week out training at track & on club runs has been paying off - he’s been getting faster for a while now & he achieved a new parkrun pb of 21:35 at Roberts Park in February not long after celebrating his entry into the V60 category. Proof that age is no barrier to pb’s! He also puts in a lot of time behind the scenes doing club communications & producing the club newsletters.
All previous winners of the Strider of the Month can be found on the club website.
