Training News with Louise Nash

We have some great plans for the Summer – I’ve tried to summarise concisely, it wasn’t easy…

WE NEED NEW LEADERS! Our weekly runs require 9-10 leaders and we’re in a position now where we’re not always able to put on all the runs. Other leaders will often step in at the last minute (thank you) but the run might not be quite what regulars were expecting. Rather than reduce the range of runs on offer, we’d been given the go-ahead to recruit more run leaders! If you’d like to find out more, contact me via facebook page or email louhiggins79@gmail.com.

A NEW HOME? During June and July our Monday evening runs will start at Bradford Amateur Rowing Club, just over the river from Hirst Wood car park, with the opportunity to socialise at the club house post-run. This is a trial; if it doesn’t work for us or the rowing club we will revert back to Caroline Street on Mondays. But it has so much potential, we think you’ll love it!

BEGINNERS’ GRADUATION: our beginners are now in their final two weeks of training! Their graduation 5k will be at Lister parkrun on Saturday 14 May. Hope you can be there to show your support to the runners and your appreciation of the massive effort put in by Donna, Julia and team! Many of the beginners’ group will then join our regular club runs. This may be a scary prospect for some of them but I’m sure we all remember what it’s like and will do our best to make them feel welcome and part of the club.

ILKLEY RUN: our annual club run to Ilkley will take place on 29 June, with at least two different paced groups. More information to follow nearer the time.

SUMMER AWAY RUNS: In addition to our club trips to Ilkley, Burnsall and Grimsby there’ll be plenty of opportunity to get to new destinations this Summer and take part in fun events such as relays, races and altogether runs – more to follow from your Captains. The club calendar is busting at the seams!

POST MARATHON RECOVERY: we’re well into marathon season and some crazy Striders are doing more than one! The marathon is gruelling. It deserves respect. It stresses and batters the body in a whole host of ways and suppresses the immune system – so a good marathon plan will include a recovery phase, generally a few weeks of easier running and good nutrition to let your body repair and strengthen. Ignore this phase at your peril! If you’ve been mad enough to enter a second marathon (let’s say Leeds) three weeks after another (let’s say London), the focus between the two should be recovery and taper. Listening to your body is crucial during these short weeks to optimise your performance at the second.

REGULAR TRAINING RUNS: we continue to meet as follows:

- Monday nights at Caroline Street, Saltaire during May at 19.00 – choice of 3-4 runs. During June/July runs will be from the rowing club.

- Wednesday nights at Carlton Keighley running track at 19.15 – interval training suitable for all or tailored to your needs. Cost £2.

- Thursday nights at Nuffield Baildon at 19.00 – a choice of 3-4 runs

ALL our regular training nights have runs suitable for ALL members.

Club coaches - our club coaches can support Striders with all aspects of running – returning from injury, improving running form, improving performance, training plans and more. Talk to any of usat training nights: Ewan Gibb, Will Kerr, Alistair Nash, Louise Nash - or message us. We can match you up with whoever will best meet your needs.

Tailored nutrition advice - Strider Izzy Anderson provides one:one consultations and will give club members a 10% discount – contact Izzy direct via her website here: https://www.izzynutrition.co.uk/

Nutrition discounts - we have secured discounts for members as follows: Mountain Fuel 15% code: Saltaire2215 http://www.mountainfuel.co.uk/ Kendal Mint 15% code: STRIDERS-2UBpVE (excludes offer, trade, subscriptions, clearance) http://www.kendalmint.co.uk/

Keep up to date: training updates/changes are usually shared via our social media platforms, please request to join in if you haven't already.

Couch to 5k

The Couch to 5k sessions have proved to be a big hit, regularly attracting good numbers of runners under the superb guidance of Donna Pollard. It's only just over 2 weeks to go until graduation at the Bradford Parkrun on May 13th. Donna has been assisted by many Striders during the programme, and hopefully there will be a good turnout of runners and supporters to encourage our C25k athletes achieve their goal!

Trip to Burnsall

SAVE THE DATE: ANNUAL CLUB TRIP TO THE RED LION

Please join us for the annual Saltaire Striders away trip to Burnsall. This year the event will be taking place on Friday 16th June.

All are welcome and invited to attend. And, of course, bring a partner or a friend to join you for the evening - they don't have to be able to run, they can go straight to the pub!

We will get a coach (paid for by the club, more details below) up to Burnsall where there will be three different runs from which to choose (or just head into the Red Lion). Following the runs, there will be the female-only option of using a room in the pub in which to freshen up or the unisex option of a wash in the Wharfe!

Following this will be an amazing five-course meal (details and menu options to follow) in the Red Lion before the return coach home.

All of this for the fantastic price of £32.50 per person!

Finalising the 2022-23 season with Tim Mosedale

While we wait for the awards night (have you got your tickets yet?) to confirm the winners of each division, we can reveal that 137 striders posted a result in one of the races, which is phenomenal!  The most popular event was the Roberts park takeover in Jan (and plenty of other striders were volunteering!).
There is the small matter of promotion and relegation.  As we've had so many runners, we're able to make the divisions a bit bigger and promote some more people.
Moving on up we have Carolyn Rix, Graham D'Arcy, Joanne Hardaker, Sheila Pepper, Tim Spencer and Tom Kay, and the 3 Richards (Airey, Thomas, and West) joining the premier league, and a nice long list moving up into the first division: Harriet Fletcher, Ian Storey, Isabel Anderson, Jenny Shaw, John Walton, Kathleen Dixon, Kathryn Wood, Lee Halliday, Norman Saldanha, Pawel Tryc, Reece Smith, Sheila Bugg, Sur Sroka, and Tim Gore.  Well done everyone!
And in what we like to call the 'Leeds' position (aka certain relegation), we have Frank Beecroft, John Singh, Mervyn Silva, Noel Fitzpatrick, Rachel Parker, Nick Breare, Barney Lerner, Mel Murley, Stephen Hetherington, Fran Guy, and two more Richards (Bond and Smith).
Full 2023-24 divisions will be sent out in May's newsletter along with the scoring for the first few races.
Well done to everyone who's taken part last year or this.

2023 Championship

We had a possible 5 races in April (including anyone wild enough to run marathons), and kudos to Ian Storey for running 3 of them, turning in performances in Burnsall, Guiseley, and Baildon.  He posts an early lead in the first division, with Stuart Dunbar and Marcus Isherwood leading premier and second divisions having run two races each.
Also a big thumbs up to Russ McFarlane who ran all 3 bunny runs, posting his best time in the last, nudging his score ahead of John Singh (first strider in race 1) by 2 seconds!  Of those of us who ran the very wet race 2, I'm still working on a weather adjusted algorithm...
Full 2023-24 tables will be in the next newsletter.
In May we have the Leeds half marathon (the same day as marathon day) and Up The Odda on the 20th - plenty of entries remain available for the latter, local race, and there could be plenty of points on offer with only half a dozen of us entered so far!

Park Run by Tim Mosedale

April gave us 5 chances to parkrun, and 14 striders ran, jogged, or walked each week (as a reminder, sadly parkrun don't share any statistics on volunteering).  It was great to see so many striders at Bradford's 13th birthday - running, volunteering, or a bit of both with quite a few pacers.
Well done to Kath Wood (25), Stuart Dunbar (50), and Ian Stevens (100) for joining new milestone clubs.  Ian Dickinson, Tom Kay, Laurence Crummay, Jamie Read, Stuart Dunbar, Harry Wilkinson, and Richard West all ran parkrun PBs in April too!

March Strider of the Month

Andy Brown. Although the men's PECO team were relegated this season, Andy retained high motivational standards throughout in finishing as the club's top point scorer over the 5 races & was able to regain the overall MV50 title (a few months short of turning 55) that he was unable to defend last season, due to missing fixtures to help out a friend with cancer. Andy then topped this achievement in March by winning the MV50 title outright at the Yorkshire Veterans Cross Country Championships in Beverley, capitalising on the opportunity after the Bradford 10k was postponed'

All previous winners of the Strider of the Month can be found on the club website.

Trial of a new base

Saltaire Striders’ original headquarters was St Bede’s school in Heaton, where runners would often meet for post-run refreshments.  This changed to Esholt Sports Club and, in more recent years, we’ve been homeless.  We manage, but members often say a base would be nice.

An unexpected upside of Will Kerr becoming injured is that he started rowing, established himself within Bradford Amateur Rowing Club, and has negotiated a deal for Saltaire Striders to try the rowing club out as a base for Summer running.

The run leaders met there this week and agreed it could be the perfect Summer base, with great route options and the potential to socialise in the club house post run.  There are changing facilities too.  So we agreed our Monday runs (best night for the rowing club) will switch from Caroline Street to Bradford Amateur Rowing Club throughout June and July.  We’ll make the first Monday of each month a social, so we can enjoy some post-run hydration, fuel and maybe even some laughter.

There’s a car park at the rowing club, or it can easily be reached on foot from either the Upper Coach Road side or over the bridge from Hirst Wood car park.

We’ll provide more info nearer the time and hopefully your run leaders will be able to lead you past our potential new home during some May runs.

PLEASE NOTE: this is a trial for both Saltaire Striders and the rowing club – if it doesn’t work out for either side, we can go back to Caroline Street.  There are no plans to use the rowing club in the Winter, it’s only for light evenings.  Thursday runs will continue to start at Nuffield.

Any queries/concerns, feel free to reply to this email or discuss with another run leader.
