Training & Nutrition with Louise Nash

Training news from Louise Nash

What a great start to the year it’s been! You’d be reading all day if I wrote about everything that’s going on and what we have planned, so I’ve limited it to a few snippets:

Beginners group – thank you, we still need you! Our beginners’ programme is now well and truly underway and proving hugely popular (over 40 beginners and returning runners!) There’s a great vibe within the group, which is down to those of you who have given up your time to turn up and support. Without overstating things, you having a positive impact on people’s lives. Thank you! We hope you’re getting something out of it too!

Of course we still need as much as help as possible to keep it going from any Strider, not just run leaders, able to turn up on a Monday/Thursday and support the leader by simply running with the group and encouraging. It doesn’t have to be a regular weekly commitment, just whatever time you can spare. Contact Donna if you’d like to be involved: DonnaMHector@aol.com

Special mentions to Donna for her superb organisation and Julia for support with leading the programme, also to Claire and Jen for help with publicity – it wouldn’t be what it is without you!

Target race: Grimsby 10k Sunday June – yes, you read it right, we’re off to Grimsby! Stewart Spink is organising this day out, including a social element – more to follow. To get you fighting fit, we’re putting together a 10k training plan (possibly plans) suitable for all levels from first timers to PB hunters looking to find that little bit extra. Keep an eye out on social media platforms (if you’re not already in these groups, ask one of the run leaders who can arrange for you to be added in):

- Facebook group “Saltaire Striders Chat”

- WhatsApp group “Saltaire Striders”

Also coming up: In addition to our usual club nights, we will be putting on some extras as the year progresses – ideas include offroad workshops, injury prevention advice and, as always, Summer away runs. Keep an eye out for details on our social media platforms above.

Monthly time trials: once a month, usually the last Weds (but this time 1 March instead of late Feb), all Striders are invited to take part in timed heats, split according to pace, of 1600m, 800m and 400m efforts. These are joint with Ilkley Harriers and take place at Carleton Keighley track. To take part just turn up to track at 19.15 (we post info on Facebook and WhatsApp.) Cost £2. Bargain.

Club coaches - our club coaches can support Striders with all aspects of running – returning from injury, improving running form, improving performance, training plans and more. Talk to any of us at training nights: Ewan Gibb, Will Kerr, Alistair Nash, Louise Nash - or message us. We can match you up with whoever will best meet your needs.

Tailored nutrition advice - Strider Izzy Anderson provides one to one consultations and will give club members a 10% discount – contact Izzy direct via her website here: https://www.izzynutrition.co.

Nutrition discounts - we have secured discounts for members as follows: Mountain Fuel 15% code: Saltaire2215 http://www.mountainfuel.co.uk/ Kendal Mint 15% code: STRIDERS-2UBpVE (excludes offer, trade, subscriptions, clearance) http://www.kendalmint.co.uk/

Latest Club Championship Standings 2022-2023

With just the Keighley Big 10 race remaining in this year's championship, the promotion and relegation spots are up for grabs!

As we approach the end of the club championship for this year, thoughts turn to promotion and relegation.
The top 6 and bottom 6 runners in each division are promoted and relegated.  If you're equal on points you'll all be going up/down.  And then as a special bonus, we even out the divisions, so this year a few more will be going up!

Remember that your fastest marathon of the year counts too - please let Tim Mosedale know any you have run.

Ultra Races

Many congratulations to Tim Mosedale on completing his debut in this distance, the Endurancelife Northumberland Coast Ultra.
This is a coastal run of 35.7 miles, climb of 2,326 feet, in a time of 7:01:50, which was not helped by a strong northerly wind throughout!
In Tim's own words:

Yesterday I learned:
- 36 miles is a long way
- beaches can be quite long
- you can see castles from quite far off, doesn't mean you're nearly there
- something or other about the human spirit overcoming adversity.

January Strider of the Month

Louise Nash. For the way she has embraced her new role of being the lead for the run leaders and re-focussing plans for the offering for club runs. She is also a fantastic coach and gives her time generously to support members, for example with training plans. She genuinely cares about club members and goes above and beyond what we expect of her.

Congratulations Louise!
