Training & Nutrition with Louise Nash and Izzy Anderson

We want our training to be fun, inclusive and, if you want it to be, challenging.  As well as our usual club nights, which we hope tick all these boxes and more, we’ll be putting on some extras over the coming months, so keep an eye out for details in the monthly Newsletter and our social media platforms (if you’re not already in these groups, ask one of the run leaders who can arrange for you to be added in):

  • Facebook group “Saltaire Striders Chat”
  • WhatsApp group “Saltaire Striders”

ON NOW

Beginners group – we need your help!  We are going to start a 12 week beginners’ programme early Feb and need some friendly Striders to help deliver it – not just run leaders, who will be busy leading our regular club runs, but any Strider who is willing to turn up on a beginners’ night (Mondays and Thursdays initially) and support the leader by simply running with the group and encouraging.  It doesn’t have to be a regular weekly commitment, although that would of course be nice!  Just whatever time you can spare.  This is a great way to give back to the club without too great a commitment. Contact Donna if you’d like to be involved: DonnaMHector@aol.com

Time trials– a great way to challenge yourself and chart your progress: once a month, usually the last Weds, all Striders are welcome to take part in timed heats, split according to pace, of 1600m, 800m and 400m efforts.  These are joint with Ilkley Harriers and take place at Carleton Keighley track.  If you fancy testing yourself, just turn up to track at 19.15 (we post info on Facebook and WhatsApp.) Cost £2.

Regular training runs – our regular weekly runs are suitable for ALL members:

  • Monday nights at Caroline Street, Saltaire at 19.00 – choice of 3 runs
  • Wednesday nights at Carleton Keighley running track at 19.15 – interval training suitable for all or tailored to your needs – or if you are following a training plan you can do your own thing.  Cost £2.
  • Thursday nights at Nuffield Baildon at 19.00 – usually a choice of 4 runs

Club coaches - our club coaches can support Striders with all aspects of running – returning from injury, improving running form, improving performance, training plans and more.  Talk to any of us at training nights: Ewan Gibb, Will Kerr, Alistair Nash, Louise Nash - or message us.  We can match you up with whoever will best meet your needs.

Marathon training and nutrition event – this event took place in Jan.  It was really well attended and we hope you got something out of it!  Please spare a couple of minutes to provide some feedback: https://forms.gle/QrEGEgmmo2QFKrqP9

If you missed it, the slides are here: [add link to slides]

And if you want more, this podcast featuring Paula Radcliffe is a good listen and reinforces a lot of what we talked about: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1gg8LQCGYt9ysJW97IuJeb

Tailored nutrition advice - Strider Izzy Anderson provides one:one consultations and will give club members a 10% discount – contact Izzy direct via her website here: https://www.izzynutrition.co.uk/

Nutrition discounts - we have secured discounts for members as follows: Mountain Fuel 15% code: Saltaire2215  http://www.mountainfuel.co.uk/ Kendal Mint 15% code: STRIDERS-2UBpVE  (excludes offer, trade, subscriptions,  clearance)  http://www.kendalmint.co.uk/

COMING SOON

As the year progresses we’re currently plotting various extras to keep things interesting: handicap events, offroad workshops, a 10k training plan targeting Grimsby 10k… plus lots lots more - stay tuned to ensure you don’t miss anything!

Club Records
The club records are now up to date on the website with as many results as we are able to ascertain.

Congratulations to Stuart Dunbar who set a new club record M60 half marathon time of 1:20:39 on January 15th at the Brass Monkey in York, beating his own record set last year at the Vale of York race!
Park Run

We have some notable Parkrun milestones to report and congratulations are due to the following Striders:

Michael Wigglesworth and Stephen Hetherington for reaching 100 and
Jenny Shaw for reaching her 50th.

We have also been asked as to whether statistics are posted in a similar manner for volunteers, who, as we all know are what makes these highly successful events possible. We are currently investigating this. Obviously all Striders who give up their time for the benefit of others should be rightly applauded.
Park Run Competition with Baildon

The inaugural Park Run knockout competition is underway. Please see the link below for pairings and early results.

December Strider of the Month

Congratulations to the December SOTM, Janet Bower.

Janet ran at least 5k every day in December for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, which was no mean feat considering the weather! On top of this, she is one of the most active run leaders since gaining her Lirf badge, a true credit to the club

All previous winners of the Strider of the Month can be found on the club website.

Barney Lerner MBE

Huge congratulations to long standing Strider Barney Lerner who has been awarded the MBE in King Charles' New Year's Honours list!
He is chairman of the Friends of Bradford Beck (FOBB), a group which has worked tirelessly to re-naturalise a stretch of the Beck and help improve over two hectares of green space near Shipley.

A project was announced in April 2022 to create a new park on the outskirts of the town, and hopefully increase fish numbers in the waterway by 20 per cent.

Speaking about his honour, Professor Lerner said: “It’s great. It was a surprise. It was lovely.

“It’s great as we’ve been working hard on Bradford Beck for about 10 years now.

“It is good that someone has recognised that, but it is not just me, there is a team of people who work on the Beck project.

“I got an email at the end of November saying that I had been nominated and would I be willing to accept. That was the first I heard of it.

“I told my family about it at Christmas, but I swore them to secrecy. It will be quite nice to tell people.”

Committee meetings

The next committee meeting will be on 1st March 2023. If you have anything which you wish to be discussed please contact or speak to any member of the committee.

All previous committee meeting and AGM minutes dating back to 2009 are available to view on the club web site
