Club Trip To Uppsala August 2023

Dear Striders. Over the years we've had many very successful club trips. Before the world came to a grinding halt a couple of years ago I'd organised a trip to Sweden which of course was cancelled. I'd like to try this again for next year.

Club Trip to Sweden (Uppsala) - 6 lakes – 6 sjöar 2023 www.6sjoar.se/en

19th August 2023

5.50 Km  23 EUR 10.50 Km 37 EUR Half Marathon    59 EUR Marathon 68 EUR

Proposed dates:

Friday, 18/08/23 – Monday, 21/08/23

Flights:

lastminute.com Friday, 18 August 09:45 Manchester (T1) direct 13:05 Stockholm (ARN) Arlanda (T5) Monday, 21 August 18:00 Stockholm (ARN) Arlanda (T5) direct 19:25 Manchester (T2) £208.92

Accommodation:

Grand Hotell Hörnan www.grandhotellhornan.com

3 nights (total)

Single room £350 Double room £420 Twin bed £402

We’ll also need transfers to and from Manchester airport. Once we know numbers, we can get this sorted.

I have looked at flights from Leeds Bradford, but the times and costs didn’t make an attractive option. It would be good to hear people's thoughts on this.

The hotel is the one recommended by the race organisers and the prices didn’t look that bad. Again, good to hear people's thoughts on this.

The races are fairly low-key events all on trails with undulating paths around the six lakes in and around Fjällnora.

As far as booking, better to book sooner rather than later as prices go up the longer we wait. I’ll start a whatsapp group when people show interest so pass me your details and I will add you to it. Once we have enough people interested, we can confirm the details and book the flights, hotel and race.

Of course, you don’t have to do any of the above and just meet us in the bar in Uppsala.

Park Run Update from Tim Mosedale

After Frankie "Beecroft" Strider's 250th parkrun last week I've been looking at the top end of the parkrun participation list.
Frank joins 16 other striders in the 250 club.  At the top of the list:
  • 369: Chris Reynier.  Chris has run more than 100 times at Bradford and more than 100 at Launceston.  As well as this event loyalty Chris has run 92 different events - and is one of the people who first inspired me to parkrun tourism!
  • Also 369: Sylvia Ross.  Sylvia would be in the 250 club just on the strength of her 255 parkruns at Bradford.  Sylvia is also in the v50 club having volunteered 64 times.
  • Just behind on 367: Martin Fillingham. Of the 3, Martin started most recently, running 367 times in just 10 years.  Martin's also currently has the 2nd fastest parkrun PB of all current striders with a 16:33 at Wetherby in 2018.

Kudos also this month to David Fox, who joined the 50 club at Roberts Park.
And lastly congratulations to some new parkrun PBs in November: Lee Halliday, Aaron McConkey, Reece Smith, and Kath Wood all backed up an October PB with another in November, which is fantastic progress.  Norman Saldanha, John Singh, Stewart Spink, and Stuart Dunbar also set new parkrun PBs this month.

Club Records
The club records are now up to date on the website with as many results as we are able to ascertain.

Congratulations are due to the following Striders who have broken club records in November:

Helen Love for her time of 1:30:16 in the F65 category at the Guy Fawkes 10-mile race on November 7th, and subsequently beating this record again with 1:25:24 at the Tadcaster 10 on November 22nd. Phenomenal Helen!

Sheila Pepper for her time of 1:53:43 in the FV70 category, also at the Tadcaster 10. Superb running Sheila!

Frank Beecroft

On Saturday November 26th our very own Frank completed his 250th parkrun at Bradford parkrun.  He’s done 248 of those at Bradford, visiting Horton & Woodhouse once each. Frank has been plagued by injury in the last few years, but in his day was quite the runner, running 5k in sub-17 minutes, 10k in 35 minutes and a marathon in 3 hours (he wasn’t happy about that one, he reckons he should have been much faster!) It was lovely to see so many Striders supporting him…well done Frank!
Alice Kershaw

Alice has completed the Hardwolds 80 (miles) as second placed female, 10th overall in a time of 15 hours 36 minutes and 28 seconds.

The Hardwolds 80 route follows the Wolds Way from Hessle to Filey passing through chalk landscapes with dry valleys and stunning wildlife alongside market Towns and ancient  villages such as Brantingham, Londesborough, Thixendale and the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy, before arriving at the seaside resort of Filey.  The total ascent for this endurance race is 7900 feet.

An extraordinary feat of endurance. Well done Alice!
Nutrition Evening

Hi everyone, it was great to see so many of you at our sports nutrition session on Tuesday. I have attached the slides for you, I hope they make sense to those of you that were unable to attend. We are planning another session on marathon nutrition in the new year so keep an eye out for further details soon. Izzy and Louise

October Strider of the Month

Is Reece Smith-Has started hitting 1st place at Roberts parkrun regularly, running 5k in sub 18 minutes. As well as smashing evensplits and the Bradford city 10k, he is a humble, approachable young man eager to help other runners with advice and suggestions where he can. Great asset to the club.

Well done Reece!

All previous winners of the Strider of the Month can be found on the club website.

Stop press! Reece pictured below approaching the finish line in first place at Roberts Park on Saturday November 26th in a new personal best time of 16:55, phenomenal Reece!

Annual General Meeting 2022

Minutes of the Annual General meeting

Held on10th November 2022 at 8.15 at the Caroline Street Club

1)         Present and Apologies

There were approximately 70 members present.

Apologies were received from: Martin Love, Michelle Ayres, Helen Brant, Mick Jones, Steve Fowler and Gary Pennington

2)         Minutes of the last AGM 11th November 2021 had been circulated and were noted

3)         Election of officers

Alun reported that one nomination had been received by the deadline for the following posts, so the nominee was elected unopposed

            Captain (Men)                                                 Stuart Dunbar

            Welfare Officer                                                Donna Pollard

            BMWR Chair                                                   Anthea Griffiths

            Runs organiser                                               Wendy Hey

            John Carr Chair                                              Rachel Parker

In line with the constitution, nominations were then invited for the remaining posts. One was received for each post so the following were elected unopposed

            Social Secretary                                             Stewart Spink

Training and Coaching Coordinator               Louise Nash

            Welfare Officer                                                Anthea Griffiths

4)         Treasurer’s Report

The financial statements and report of the independent examiner (Ian Jenkins) had been circulated. Tim illustrated how the money was spent with a load of balls which was greatly appreciated.

Mike Moss asked if we felt we were getting value from our subscription to Northern Athletics. He felt if we were going to pay we should attempt to get more participation in NA events, and publicise them better. This will be further discussed at committee with a view to reviewing in a years time

The accounts were accepted and Ian was thanked and asked to continue.

5)         Chairman’s Report

Ewan looked back on an interesting year. He thanked the committee members and especially outgoing members Helen Brant, Bernie Bowden and Richard West. He welcomed new members and thanked them for stepping up to support the club in this way.

He noted hat there had been many great individual performances and especially the numbers of runners who were stepping up their distances and even taking on ultra events.

He welcomed the new run leaders and coaches and encouraged members to take advantage of the advice that the coaches could give.

Finally he thanked the members of the club for their involvement, and noted that even when there had been contentious issues, and debate had been passionate, it had also been constructive and respectful.

Looking to the future he hoped that our new members would continue to get more involved in the running and social life of the club and that older members would continue to be encouraging and welcoming.

6)         Membership update and 2022/23 fees

The recommendation from the management committee as to the new fees had been circulated Tim explained that EA registration had increased again and though we had adsorbed this last year we could not do so again. and so fees were recommended to increase by £2 for full members, but with no increase for non-competing members and second claim members who do not pay the EA fee. He confirmed that members joining through the year would pay reduced fees on a sliding scale although the EA fee was unchanged except for new members registering in March who get 13 months registration.

The recommendation was approved with 2 abstentions.

7)         Constitutional Amendment

Alun introduced the proposal from the committee. In response to questions Donna confirmed that she had taken advice from EA and looked at other clubs documentation and was confident that with a process for parental consent added there were no issues that would prevent this change. The proposed amendment :

in Section 4 (membership)

Replace

“The minimum age for membership is 18 years”

with

“The minimum age for membership is 16 years”

Was passed with none against and 2 abstentions.

8)         Captains’ Address

Stuart Dunbar spoke on behalf of both captains, unfortunately Clare was unable to attend.

He referred to some excellent team performances in the PECO xx series, Vets races, BMWR, LCWR and CWR. In the Even Splits 5K series and the NA 12 stage relays. There were also a number of individual category winners and ‘podium places”

Looking to the future He had an ambition to grow the club, particularly at the younger end. He hoped we would continue to improve in the PECOs and keep all teams, including the newly promoted ladies team in the premiere divisions. He wanted to see more teams and individuals in the NA events and in the local relays. In support of this we will endeavour to give good notice of key events and do everything to encourage participation

9)         Proposed Club Trip (Uppsala)

Stewart Spink spoke about the trip he was planning to organise and asked anyone interested to get in touch.

10)       Club Championship

The Club Championship year has been changed to coincide with the membership year ie from 1st April to 31st March. The list of races would be released in the near future and suggestions for other events  were welcomed.

11)       London Marathon Ballot

20 Striders had been entered in the club ballot and the lucky members drawn out of the hat by Mike Moss were Igs Robun and Jez Rix

12)       Any other Business

Louise Nash reminded everyone about the sports nutrition session she and Izzy were putting on at the Baildon Link on 22nd November. All are encouraged to attend this introductory session. If it proves successful it is hoped to provide some more sessions tailored to specific events
