Upcoming Race Events

Relay- 19th July

The annual relay competition V Baildon runners is relocating this year due to the closure of the Woolpack in Esholt. We are planning to keep the format the same i.e. short off-road laps with teams drawn at random. We are planning to hold the event either in Roberts Park/Northcliffe Park and will issue details nearer the time. It will be just a case of turning up on the night but it would be good if people can wear a Striders top. There will be prizes after the race and drinks in a pub afterwards.

Golden Acre Park Relay 12th July

6 teams have already been entered for this but you may still be able to enter yourselves if you like. This is a great event and we are hopefully going to regain the vets prize….

Run Back from Ilkley August 11th

In place of the regular club runs we are planning a run back over Ilkley Moor from the station. The plan is to catch the train from Shipley/Saltaire/Baildon to Ilkley and then run back over the moor to Baildon Station a distance of about 7-8miles (with one significant hill). Final details will be published in the week before the event.

Murder Mile 3rd August

This will be hosted by Baildon Runners and will consist of a mile challenge (run in separate heats) and (hopefully a 4x400m relay). It will be held at our regular slot at the Keighley so you can see how all those hard track sessions have paid off when we beat Baildon (again)…. ;)

Leeds Country Way Relay 4th September

This event returns this year after a 2 year absence and so if you are interested then please give your names to one of the club captains who will be organising the teams. This is a similar format to the BMWR but consists of 6 legs. The legs are 10-12 miles but not quite as demanding as some of the BMWR legs. It would be good to get at least 2 teams together…

Bradford Millennium Way Relay Sunday 12th June 2022

The BMWR is a 5 stage relay run in pairs around our area. As a club we have hosted the event for 20 years and it is our main race event for the year. The legs vary from 8-11 miles with varying ascents/descents.

After last year’s bumper entry edition the team numbers were down somewhat for various reasons but there were still 37 teams eager to take part in the event including two of our own:

The day didn’t start well as we got the message that Beth had Covid so couldn’t run, fortunately David Stephens was able to take her place so we could field two full teams. The conditions were generally good on the day but with a strong Westerly wind. A strong effort by both teams resulted in a 6th place finish for team 1 and 31st for team 2.

Wharfedale Harriers were the overall winners with Pudsey Pacers third overall and first Vets team. Ilkley harriers were the first placed mixed team and Valley Striders had the first placed Ladies team. Full results are available on the club website:

Well done to everyone that took part and thanks to all the wonderful marshals and helpers that made the event successful. If anyone has any feedback on how we can improve the event in future please pass on your comments to a committee member.

Stuart Dunbar set a new 10 mile MV60 record at the Eccup 10 in 1:03:36
Sheila Pepper set a new 1 mile FV70 record at Hyde Park in 09:40
Martin Fillingham in the MV50 also at the Hyde Park Mile in 4:54

May Strider of the Month

Deservedly is Martin Fillingham!

Martin delivered an unbelieveable performance at God’s Own Backyard Ultra, an event involving a 4.167mi ‘yard’ to be completed on the hour, every hour! To the amazement of all concerned, Martin somehow maintained his pace of 30ish minutes per ‘yard’ for 28 ‘yards’, totalling 116.667mi and taking Martin to the top of the Saltaire Striders ‘Ultramarathon Hall of Fame’… for the time being, anyway!

Club Training Runs / Structured Sessions

1. Monday evenings at 19:00 meeting at Caroline Street/Victoria Road, Saltaire. Four Group runs varying in distance and pace.

2. Monday return to running meeting as above

3. Tuesday structured training, meet as above at 19:30. The content of this for May will be announced on our Facebook page weekly.

4. Wednesday track sessions at Keighley track are back at Carlton Keighley (formerly UAK), Green Head Rd, Keighley, BD20 6EB

We have a track share arrangement with Ilkley Harriers, each club paying half of the booking fees. Since re-starting, these sessions have proved to be very popular, regularly attracting 20+ Striders every week. This IS NOT just for the rapid runners, all capabilities are catered for!

• Start time is 7.30pm, so arrive a few minutes before, ready for warm up and drills before the main session.

• Entry has been reduced to £2 collected on attendance - please bring the correct change.

5. Thursday evenings at 19:00. Please note the following alteration for the summer season:

• Thursday run venues will alternate on a weekly basis between Nuffield in Shipley, and The Woolpack Inn in Esholt.
The first run from Esholt will be on Thursday 7th April, and thereafter the 21st and so on.
IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT DUE TO LOWER THAN EXPECTED NUMBERS TRAVELLING TO ESHOLT EVERY OTHER WEEK THAT WE REVERT TO NUFFIELD SHIPLEY WEEKLY. A FACEBOOK POLL WILL BE CREATED TO CANVASS MEMBERS OPINIONS.

Saturday/Sunday long runs

There is a closed facebook group Saltaire Marathon, Long Or Short Run Friends for people who are interested in doing some longer runs (e.g. for company for marathon training) at a steady pace. The runs are arranged via the group on an ad-hoc basis. If interested please ask to join the group.
