After the Leeds half marathon the club received the following message

“Can you share with the group. A lovely member got me over the finish line at Leeds Half. I felt hot, exhausted. He got me over and I am so grateful😍 I forgot his name but he was an hero”

A lovely message from Dawn Redwood.  Who is our Striders Good Samaritan? 👏🏼

Take a bow Craig 'Yorkshire' Elliott.
Don't Panic Captain Mainwaring

Sadly, this month we lose one of our long standing members when Mick 'Corporal' Jones bids us farewell as he heads darn sarf to be nearer his family..

Mick joined St. Bede's A.C. in the early 90s from Horsforth Harriers and was for many years the cross-country captain.

Mick was involved in the early years of the organization of the Bradford Millennium Way relay and was also a club coach and run leader.  Many of you may know him as a prolific park runner.

We wish Mick all the best for his move and look forward  to seeing him when, no doubt, he'll be making the occasional return visit to Gods own County.

October featured race(s)

Bradford City Runs - Bradford's own Festival of Running!

Bradford City Runs is a festival of running with a unique format: one 5K loop to create 3 race distances. The 5K loop of Bradford city centre takes in City Park, Bradford University, the Broadway and Little Germany. One lap gets you 5K, two gets you 10K, and 4 (and a bit) gets you a half marathon. Choose your distance.

The races start by the old Odeon and head out on Thornton Road and then a bit of a climb through the university campus (the half marathon has a loop back down Thornton Road before heading into the university campus).  There is a good stretch of downhill past Bradford College and past the Alhambra before heading out through Broadway to a loop round Little Germany.

The route returns via Market st. (with a minor detour) to City park and out onto a second or subsequent lap.  On your last lap don't be caught out because there is a lap round the City Park before reaching the finishing line.

This is a club championship event and a good local race.
Club Championship

Upcoming races and details of how the championship works are on the website.: New members are automatically added to the second division.

Next up is the Abbey Dash on 24th Oct. followed by the Apperley Bridge Canter on 30th and Bradford city runs on 31st.

2021 Club AGM and Committee places

The Club AGM will be held  at Caroline Street Social Club on Thursday 11th Nov.  Club training that night will be out and back runs from Caroline Street,

The day to day running of the club is done by a Management Committee of eleven members which meets every month or so. There are also four other officers with specific jobs who are not part of the committee, but attend when needed. All officers are elected for three years at the AGM although they can, and sometimes do, retire before the end of a term in which case the post is filled by cooption if needed until the next AGM. Because of this different officers are elected at each AGM, depending on when they were first elected and if the sequence has been altered by early retirements.

Officers can be re-elected once, at the end of their first term, but cannot be elected for the same post a third time, so have to stand down after a maximum of six years. This helps make sure there is a healthy turnover and gives opportunities for new members to get involved (although there is nothing to stop any member from putting themselves forward for any post, even if the current post holder is standing again). It also prevents an officer from feeling obliged to continue doing a job for longer than they would really want to.

This year the following posts are coming up for election: Treasurer, Ladies Captain, Membership Officer, Communications Officer (Management Committee posts) and Male Vets Captain and John Carr chair (not Management Committee posts).

The current Treasurer (Richard Stone), Communications Officer (Jack Verity) and Male Vets Captain (Martin Love) are not eligible to stand again so we must find a new member for these positions.  Also, the Ladies captain (Helen Brant), has indicated that she will not be standing for re-election so the ladies will need to come up with a new captain.

Rachel Parker has also stood down as chairperson so again another position needing to be filled.

Getting involved with the running of the club is a rewarding experience. If you think you might like to be involved, and want to know more details of what is involved in a particular role please talk to the current post holders, or any committee member - with no obligation!

Pecos are coming

For the new members, and those who haven't done them before, these are a series of 5 trail races (4 - 5 miles) which are the highlight of the winter.  The provisional dates and venues are:

14th Nov. Middleton Park, Leeds
5th Dec. Temple Newsam
19th Dec. Middleton Park, Leeds (Different course to race 1)
23rd Jan. West Park/Becketts Park, Leeds
20th Feb. Roundhay Park, Leeds
The clubs affiliated to the League compete across men's and ladies divisions. The simplest way to enter is to buy a season ticket online in advance for just £15, which provides entry to all five races. Once registered and paid for, you will not need to register again all season. You will collect your season race number at the first race you attend and then you just turn up to each race with your number and run.  Members are encouraged to enter before the 31st Oct. to receive a personalised chip timing number.

Alternatively you can enter each race on the day. The cost to enter each race individually on the day is £7. All entrants will be allocated a race number (with timing chip) which they must keep for the whole season. Replacements for lost or damaged numbers can be purchased at Race HQ for £3 for seniors.

RULES FOR ENTRY:

1. The league is exclusive to the clubs that are members of the PECO XC league.

2. All competitors must be paid up members of a club which is affiliated to England Athletics at the time of the race.

3. Club members should be affiliated to England Athletics at the time of the race and should wear their official club vest.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO ENTER ON THE DAY, then you will be defined as a "guest" and will not contribute to your team score, or be eligible for points in the individual series competition. Only advance entries will be League "counters".

August Strider of the Month
The winner of the August Strider of the month award was Noel Fitzpatrick, He has run every day for 1 year. He promised his daughter that he would run for every day she had to take her medication, thinking it would be a few months, now a year later, she is still on medication and kept his promise to her, in all weathers and even around the garden when waiting for a covid test result.

All previous winners of the Strider of the Month can be found on the club website.
Committee meetings

The next committee meeting will be held on 6th October - if you have anything which you wish to be discussed please contact or speak to any member of the committee.

Track sessions
Our interval sessions at Keighley track are back on Wednesday evenings at 7:30

First session is Wednesday 6th October at Carlton Keigley (formerly UAK), Green Head Rd, Keighley, BD20 6EB

We've all missed our Track sessions, and whilst the school has reopened the track, it has been on a monthly sole booking basis, making it expensive for the club to pay for without having a significant guaranteed number attending every session.

After some lengthy negotiations, we have managed come up with a Track share option with Ilkley Harriers, each club paying half of the booking fees.

• Start time is now  7.30pm, so arriving a few minutes before, ready for warm up and drills before the main session which for the first month will be run by Ali and Louise

• Entry will cost the bargain price of  £3 collected on attendance by Ali/Louise so please bring the right change. (if numbers are good, and cover our booking fees, we may be able to drop back to £2.

As ever Track is open for all members, all paces catered for and newbies are always more than welcome, so don't be shy. It's a fantastic way to improve performance whatever your preferred terrain and distance, just ask any of the track veterans .

Looking forward to seeing a great track turnout to make the track share worthwhile!

Calderdale Way relay report by Stuart Dunbar

The Calderdale Way is a 6 stage relay run in pairs around Halifax. The legs vary from 5 to over 10 miles but all have ‘significant’ elevations to ascend/descend. Historically it was run in the winter and so hence the regulations have included carrying full weather gear etc. Normally it is run in May but due to last year’s event being cancelled it was held in September this year. Having never run it before I was unaware for what it was like but assumed it would be similar to the BMWR but with a bit more climbing.

We had already entered two teams for the 2020 race and so these were carried over but unfortunately we were not able to fill the mixed team so just had an open team. We had a few last minute problems with a couple of dropouts but a few pleading messages did the job and, despite some reservations about carrying full waterproofs etc. we had a full team.

Thanks to everyone who competed and managed to do their recces (apart from me) and managed to get round in a very respectable 9th in the Open category and 11th place overall. It is worth noting that we only had 3 non Vets and, had we been in the Vets category (V40+) we would have been in second place and only about 13 mins off the lead place.

Leg Dist. Elev. Name Time Leg Pos. Overall time Overall pos.

This was my first CWR and I must say that it was a well organised race and I would definitely do it again and I hope we can get two teams (at least) next year when I believe it will return to its usual mid-May slot.

Northern 6 stage road relay report by Stuart Dunbar

After the drama of the club vote to see whether the club wanted to maintain its affiliation to NA came the job of getting some teams together to compete in the 6 stage relays which were held on the seafront near Redcar on 18th September. There was some interest but, with the congested race calendar/injuries etc. it was difficult to get the usual Striders dream team together. In the end we managed to get two men’s teams together and despite the former Club captains last minute withdrawal he managed to secure an 11th hour signing of Marcin Soszka who was just one week away from Berlin Marathon. A condition of his contract was that he needed to be on leg one so he could return home early, this was OK as the B team lead out man Loris also needed to return for work. Thanks to John Singh for his Taxi and Gazebo carrying efforts…

The conditions were near perfect with light winds and a nice temperature, we arrived a little later than planned but Alun had managed to get the race numbers sorted out while the rest of the team set the Gazebo up. Anthea did a great job of distributing the race numbers as well as being the official photographer/cheerleader. The legs were a straightforward, flat out and back 6km on the coastal road with a turnaround just before Marske. There was a slight tailwind on the return which made a negative split a possibility.

It was fairly obvious that we would not qualify for the finals as only the top 25 places would be eligible and the pace was very fast as our fastest runner (Marcin) only managed 37th place but we came a respectable 53rd out of 72 complete teams and the B team managed to not finish in last place…

Leg 2 Stephen Hillas 28:14
Leg 3 Alun Griffiths 28:26
Leg 4 Tim Mosedale 26:57
Leg 5 Paul Parkins 23:42
Leg 6 Darren Parker 29:46

Andy Brown was responsible for local knowledge and found a suitable venue for the post-race celebration meal of a Fish and Chip tea and ice creams on the seafront at Redcar. Thanks to everyone who did their bit for the team and hopefully we can get a team or two in for the 12 stage relays next year.
