Upcoming Events And Diary Dates
1. Annual General Meeting
Will take place on Thursday November 14th at the Caroline Street Club. An agenda will be issued shortly, plus details of posts being vacated on the committee which are up for election. More details to follow shortly.
2. Peco Cross Country
Everyone's favourite cross country league kicks off on the 17th November at Temple Newsam. Entries will be open soon via pecoxc.co.uk. Dust off those mudclaws and get stuck in to the rain, wind and mud and enjoy the 4-5 mile trail routes!
We have updated the scoring approach for our personality championship which runs alongside the running club championship. This celebrates the people who represent the club, from volunteering to involvement in relay and cross country teams, to Strider of the Month recognition. It's not about going fast, it's all about showing up!
The championship year runs from April to March. Scoring is as follows:
Volunteering for BMWR and John Carr (10 points each)
Volunteering for parkrun takeovers, EA 10k, and Bradford city runs (7 points each)
Running for the club (or unselected reserve) in relays such as BMWR, LCWR, Road Relays (5 points each)
Running for the club in Peco races (1 point each, bonus 5 points for all races)
Running for the club in YVAA grand prix (5 points if 2+ races run)
Strider of the Month win (10 points) or nomination (5 points, max of 15)
Club Kit Shop
We are about to launch a new and expanded range of kit from a new supplier, full details of this will be revealed shortly!
Championship race preview
Just the one championship race in October with the postponement of the Bradford City runs, the Leeds Abbey Dash, entries will close on Tuesday October 8th. This 10k road course is pretty much totally flat, and is an out and back route from the Headrow in Leeds to Kirkstall Abbey, and is in it's 38th year. Definitely a PB course!
Please see the records section on the website, which now include parkruns.
The club records are now up to date on the website with as many results as we are able to ascertain.
Alice Kershaw
Our extraordinary Ultra runner Alice has recently completed another brute of an ultra race, the infamous Dragon's Back.
I approached Alice to give an insight into the world of an ultra runner:
Conquering the Dragon's Back
The Dragon's Back, Conwy to Cardiff down the mighty pointy, boggy, gnarly and sometimes remote spine of Wales. It sells itself as 'The World's Toughest Mountain Race'. I didn't realise when I signed up, I thought it was only 'Britain's toughest', and having done 'Britain's most brutal' race, the Summer Spine, in 2023, it seemed only fitting to do the other one!
It takes place over 6 days, you go up (and down!) nearly 60k vert and cover 240 ish miles, camping each night at set stopping points, following a route but with some opportunities for scrambling and navigational excitements. It is very well named as a race because it keeps burning you daily with about 40 miles and 12-16 hours on feet, but you know there is treasure in the mountains if you can convince the beast to give it to you. The first two days cover Snowdonia, including what the race description calls an 'airy scramble' over Crib Goch to the top of Snowdon, and a bottom slide down the Snowdon horseshoe to the first campsite. The third day covers the Cambrian Mountains and the most exciting point on the route, the Machynlleth co -op, aka the only opportunity to stock up on food on the route. Best sarnie I have ever eaten! Day 4 was a proper slog for me, through the remote and tussocky Elan Valley, somewhere I managed to get through by telling myself if I did I would never go back. Sure its lovely on fresh legs…
Day five was the hardest by far, it’s the longest at 44 miles and hits the Brecons. On other days I had been safely under the cut offs by around 2 hours but not this one, I was chasing them from Pen-Y-Fan, with a last hour racing to get into camp before 10pm, scrambling down a rocky, muddy gully in a dark forest and channelling Jasmin Paris on the Barkley Marathons to get in with 30 minutes to go. Critical as they stop serving dinner at 10 and no way was I missing that!
It doesn't let up, and you have to be happy on your feet all day in all conditions, navigating, sorting your kit, climbing gnarly things, bum sliding down hills, bog trotting and picking good lines. Camping overnight brings its own challenges, no showers, sharing a tent with strangers and having to manage all your kit to keep it dry, clean (ish) and all together under the weight limits imposed on the kit that could be transported.
The last day I had driven myself into the ground so comprehensively that it was a 'speedwalk' to the end, not a chance of running except slowly down some hills. When we went through Merthyr it was 9am and their local parkrun was going the other way, a really different pace to all of us stinky dragons! Finishing in Cardiff was incredible, my parents and husband met me with a pizza at the end, and I collected my dragon model for finishing! Wales, done.
Alice on Day 2
Leeds Country Way Relay
The Striders 'Social' team took to the trails and paths on this 6 leg 64 mile relay on September 1st, and put in a creditable finishing position of 51st out of 61 teams. A good effort from the majority of our team who have not taken part in a relay before. It was agreed by all that this will be repeated next year, potentially at this race, and the BMWR and Calderdale events.
Great credit must go to Sue Sroka for pulling together the team, and to Tim Mosedale for his support at every stage and running a leg as well!
Leg 1 to 2 handover, incoming Martin and Helen Love handing off to Alun Griffiths and David Bower.
No Watch Night
The annual No watch night took place alongside our friends from Baildon Runners on Thursday September 12th. Well done to the winner Krystina Kozlowska who was astonishingly just 2 seconds out on her predicted time, and 3rd place Rich Sykes. The winner of the booby prize was Simon Frazer who managed to mix up km and miles...
Track sessions on Wednesdays continue through the seasons, rain or shine, cold or hot. Under the expert guidance of Ali and Louise Nash they put together a different programme every week. Track is open for everyone, and really helps to improve your running. Come on, give it a go!
