Bradford Millennium Way Relay 2024
The Bradford Millennium Way Relay (BMWR) is our main event of the year and was, as usual, well supported by our own club members as well as over 40 other teams.
This year Saltaire entered two teams as below:

The weather on the day was very different to last year's heatwave and so there was little risk of heat exhaustion or dehydration however there were some last-minute substitutions required due to injuries and illness. Fortunately we had some reserves so thanks to Dan Jenkins for stepping up to the open team and Josh for doing the Anchor leg for the Mixed team. A special mention too for Lesley Watson of Bingley Harriers who stepped in at very late notice to ensure we still had a full mixed team. Also worthy of mention was Richard Ling who took on the challenge of running with me on his first ever BMWR. Fortunately, there were no accidents or incidents on the day but I did hear a loud snap when Tim Mosedale ran into a large branch….
Thanks also to Anthea Griffiths and Alun for their superb organisation over many months, everyone who gave up their time to help make the event a success, some such as Donna Hector helping out at two checkpoints. Also a big thankyou to Mike Moss as race director and race adjudicator. Finally, to Richard Smith for his help with the venue at Bradford and Bingley rugby club.

The overall winners were the same as last year- Wharfedale Harriers and Bingley ladies with Pudsey Pacers taking both the Vets and Mixed prizes. Our male team was a creditable 5th overall and the Mixed team came in 29th.
If you have been inspired to enter a race like this you don’t have to wait until next year as the Leeds Country Way relay (LCWR) is coming up on 1st September and I’m hoping we can get 3 teams together including a full ladies team. The club will pay for your entry so all you have to do is turn up and run your leg with a partner (and a baton). I will be posting up an entry form over the next few weeks so look out for an email….
Captain's Curry Night
22 Striders attended the Captain's curry night on Friday 31st May at Shimla Spice in Shipley for a good social evening, and also to acknowledge Stuart Dunbar's 62nd birthday!

The 2024-25 championship is well underway, July sees two races in the calendar with two races over the weekend of the 13th and 14th.
First up is the Baildon Carnival Canter 5k race starting from the Rugby Club, entries are available on the day for this challenging trail race.
Next is the ever popular Ilkley road half marathon on Sunday 14th. Good luck to all those taking part!

Parkrun Competition with Ilkley and Baildon
We're now at the final stage, with our very own skipper, Stuart Dunbar the last Strider standing! The results up to and including the semi finals are as shown below.
The competition has proved popular, and a success, and we'll be looking to repeat it in the future.

Alistair Nash and the Tenerife Blue Trail Ultra 110k
Few races offer the opportunity to start from the coast, run between rocks and volcanic cones, ascend between the irregular rocks of the Badlands, take a break contemplating the island in its entirety from the summit of Mount Teide at 3,555 meters and then descend vertiginously between pine forests and corners of laurel forest until reaching paths at the edge of the sea on the north coast.
Ali completed this fearsome race in brutal hot weather in a remarkable 23 hours 59 minutes and 15 seconds, over a distance of 110km and climbing of over 20,000 feet. Of the 500 brave souls who started the race around 300 finished.
A remarkable effort of stamina and mental strength, well done Ali!

Club Training Runs
1. Monday evenings at 19:00 . Meet at Caroline Street/Victoria Road. Four Group runs varying in distance and pace, PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL REVERT TO MEETING AT THE ROWING CLUB BEGINNING ON MAY 13th. Please also note that it will only be possible to use the rowing club car park if Will Kerr or Simon Frazer are present to open the entrance gate!
2. Wednesday track sessions at Keighley track are back atCarlton Keighley (formerly UAK), Green Head Rd, Keighley, BD20 6EB.
We have a track share arrangement with Ilkley Harriers, each club paying half of the booking fees. Since re-starting, these sessions have proved to be very popular, regularly attracting 20+ Striders every week. This IS NOT just for the rapid runners, all capabilities are catered for!
• Start time is 7.15pm, so arrive a few minutes before, ready for warm up and drills before the main session.
• Entry has been reduced to £2 collected on attendance - payment now by card, no cash please!
3. Thursdayevenings at 19:00, starting from Nuffield Shipley
Four group runs varying in distance and pace.
4. MONTHLY STRUCTURED TRAINING SESSION.
Our next monthly structured training session led by Richard West will take place on a Monday TBA.
Saturday/Sunday long runs
There is a closed facebook group Saltaire Marathon, Long Or Short Run Friends for people who are interested in doing some longer runs (e.g. for company for marathon training) at a steady pace. The runs are arranged via the group on an ad-hoc basis. If interested please ask to join the group.
