featured race
Stanbury Splash fell race
11:30,12th January - Haworth
The parking / toilets / Registration are at the
Penistone Hill Country Park. If you've ever fancied doing a
fell race but not sure whether it might be too tough this is a
nice introduction.
6.7 mile 1200ft : BM
Starting from Penistone Hill Country Park and
circuiting the upper reaches of Ponden Clough and Stanbury Moor.
Route
Starting from the quarry bottom on Penistone, turn
right onto the road and then left onto the Bronte Way
track. Just past the ruins of Middle Intake Farm it turns
right through a gate and down through the fields to cross Sladen
Beck, the first of many times for wet feet. Its then an
inevitably muddy climb, back up the other side to reach the
track continuing from Back Lane. Turn left, uphill, on a good
track, to Upper Heights Farm where the route branches right on a
narrow footpath to circuit Ponden Clough and passing by Ponden
Kirk. On a clear day there are magnificent views down the Clough,
but on a misty day it can be quite bleak. After circuiting the
Clough, with several more beck crossings and even more wet feet,
you will meet back with the outgoing course, when you will retake
the route back towards the start. Carefeul as you descend back to
cross Sladen Beck as it can be hard to stay upright, then climb
back through the fields. Just after you pass Middle Intake
farm, bear right off the track and onto the path to take the
shortest way back to the finish line on the cricket pitch.

Roy
Wilks RIP
It is with sadness that we have to report the
passing of another former member of the St. Bede's club, Roy
Wilks, who died suddenly on 19th Dec. Roy was a stalwart of
the club in the 90's and into the 2000's. For several years
Roy organised the popular Beckfield 10k from the nursing home
where he worked on Bolton Lane.
Along with his wife Jackie, Roy worked hard on the social front
of the club organising club weekends to Center Parcs and trips
abroad. Longer standing members of the club will remember quiz
nights at Esholt on the evenings after Calderdale Way relays.
Roy also produced the club magazine Bede-e-eye and Eye Balls out in
the days before the internet.
On the running front Roy was a decent performer, 1990 being a
particularly good year running 35:43 for 10k at the O&K Escalators
race in Keighley and 60:21 for the tough Burnsall 10 miles.
Later Roy turned to fell running and ran the first
Yorkshireman marathon with Mike Moss (which turned out to be 28+
miles) he also completed "the beast" - the Wadsworth
Trog a couple of times.
Roy was an active member of the club committee and a founder
member of the Bradford Millennium Way organising committee and
lead marshall at the Laycock handover.

It's
still not too late to grab a bargain at just £5.
Produced in A3 format and full-colour, it is a proper
working calendar and not just an ornament.
We have made considerable effort to include every
member that takes part in club runs where possible.
Being the first time we have only produced a limited number of
calendars and offered on a first-come-first-served basis. At
£5 a calendar a bargain!

Proposed
club trip to Sweden August 2020
A few members are going on a trip to Sweden next
year if anyone would like to join us. This is to take part in the
6 Lakes race series:
Note:
This is a DIY trip.
You will need to book the flights, accommodation and race entry
yourself. Feel free to do your own thing - the following
are just suggestions. All the information about the race and
travel is on the race organiser's web site https://www.6sjoar.se/en/home/
All distances are catered for 5k, 10k, half and full. It looks to
be a friendly low key event. The races take place around 6 lakes
near Uppsala (about 40 minutes north of Stockholm.) and are
a mix of road, gravel track and off-road,
Race date is 15th August so the plan is to go out on Friday 14th
and return Monday 17th.
Flights are from Manchester. These are the ones most of us are
choosing:
Out: SAS 09:45 Manchester 2h 20min direct 13:05 ARN Stockholm
Arlanda
Back: SAS 16:20 ARN Stockholm Arlanda 2h 30min direct 17:50 MAN
Manchester
The hotel of choice is Clarion Hotel Gillet in central Uppsala.

Club
Records
Congratulations to Tim Baldwin who absolutely
smashed the club 10k record with his time of 31:33 at Ribble
Valley, taking almost 2 minutes off an already impressive PB.
Almost certainly breaking the 5k record as well en route.
Not to be outdone Louise Nash took over a minute and a half
off the F50 record which in itself is pretty impressive coming
only 3 days after the tough Chevin Chase.

November
Strider of the Month

Claire
Thaper - November can only be
described as an amazing and unbelievable month for Claire.
Starting with her first Ultra, White Rose (30m), a very hilly,
wet, off road course, in the worse weather conditions. A real
tough ask from the start but after hitting the biggest of ‘Walls’
half way round and taking a very nasty fall, she dusted herself
off, wiped off the tears and showed truly amazing grit and
determination to finished the race with a massive smile.
She followed that up, with what only can be described as the
longest recovery run ever, completing the hilly Guy Fawkes 10 the
following morning, and despite heavy legs and a sore body from
the previous days efforts, Claire absolutely smashed the course
and really earned that post race chocolates and endorse the
saying ‘ultra runners don’t run up hill’!!
But Claire wasn’t finished there and decided to tackle her first
ever fell race and take part in very muddy and extremely hard
Harriers vs Cyclist!. As always she showed the grit and
determination of any great runner and pushed herself all the way
to the end. Despite finishing with the comment ‘What the
hell was that’, the usual smile and sense of achievement quickly
return .
In November Claire has become a fell runner, an ultra but more
importantly she has shown all the qualities of a great runner and
is fully deserving of this award. What a woman!
