Summer Away runs

The next away run is Thursday 6th June from Swinsty reservoir led by Stewart Spink.  Meet at the Yorkshire Water Swinsty and Fewston car park.

On the road from Otley to Blubberhouses take the right turn signed to Timble (best to then follow the wider road rather than the narrow road through Timble village) and the car park is on your right - if you find yourself on the straight road between the 2 reservoirs you've gone too far!

Meet at Nuffield at 18:40 to car share or in the car park at 19:00.  There will be 3 runs a 4 miles steady, 6.5 miles steady and 6.5 miles a little (or a lot) quicker.  Afterwards retire to a pub on the road back to Otley (exact pub TBC on the night).

Future away runs are:

Thurs. 4th July - Catch the 18:57 train from Baildon to Ilkley (fare £3.40) and run back over the moors approx. 8 miles.
Thurs. 1st August - Haworth - leader Matt Richardson
Thurs. 5th Sept. - Thornton - leader Alun Griffiths

Exact meeting points for future away runs will be nearer the time.

There will be no runs from Nuffield on these dates.

June featured race

Hollybank Eccup 10m - Sun 30th June 9:30

This race has a limit of 1000 and has sold out in the last 2 years but still has 300+ places left at the time of writing.  It is a club championship race.

It has good car parking facilities at Bedquilts Recreation Ground, Adel Lane not far from the Leeds ring road at Weetwood.

A run in the country that starts in the city! The course takes in rural closed roads and a scenic route around Eccup reservoir (running on the dirt track between 3 - 4.5 miles round 2 sides of reservoir).

Beware of the fast downhill start and remember you'll be coming back up this hill in the last mile.  Watch out for the sleeping policemen after you leave the dirt track - a couple of people took a tumble on these last year.  There are a few long straight stretches which could be exposed if windy.

Last year was roasting temperatures Will Kerr finished  2nd in 57:12 with 11 people finishing inside 60 mins.  There were 764 finishers with the last finisher being  2:31.  A race T-shirt to all finishers.

Club Trip Reims 2019
Date : Sunday 20th October
Distances : Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k

Race registration is now open.  Not sure how quickly the events sell out, so it might be worth while entering sooner rather than later.

There is a template for the required medical certificate on the Run In Reims website.  If you would like to complete and upload this as part of your registration, and want Alun (Griffiths) to sign for you, then please print it, complete it, and see Alun on a club night.  If you don’t get it done straight away don’t worry, you can always add it post registration.   Completion of the certificate is your responsibility.

For full details see the January newsletter.

If you already know that you will be joining the trip, or have any questions  then please e-mail Lindsey Pearson

Birthdays

Happy birthday to the following members who have a birthday in June.

Dave Armstrong, Bernie Bowden, Janet Bower, Rachel Boyd, Charlotte Hardy, Andrea Longrigg, Sally Malir, Rahul Mehra, Laura Richardson and Mervyn Silva.

New Members

Welcome to Shane Corcoran, Ezhil Anand and Tim Shea who have joined the club in May.
Club Members Survey

126 members responded to the survey. Of those that entered any comments 15 members replied that they were completely happy with things as they are. 50 members provided feedback and suggestions on things they would like to see.  Some suggestions we have been able to address immediately, e.g. another return to running course, featured monthly race in the newsletter, update each month on the club championship.

A number of members made similar suggestions e.g. organise a UK club coacj trip to a race similar to the ones we have had in the past to the Liverpool half marathon and we will work on providing something in the future.

Several comments were made on the first Monday non-stop out and back run and we have provided feedback on why it is seen as a useful tool for members and the benefits of continuing to include this run.

Lots of different comments were made on training e.g. Tuesday social run, Wednesday run, Saturday run, comments about run leaders – we will convene a run leaders meeting to discuss the comments and what we can do to offer more options.

A number of comments were made regarding more run options to accommodate the slower / social runners - to provide these we will need more slower run leaders, so if you are interested in leading these runs (the club will fund the one day training course) please get in touch with a committee member.

Members should appreciate that there are a limited number of voluntary run leaders available who are all active runners themselves and have other commitments.

On a lighter note here are some of the answers to the question about what car and / or animal you would be:

A clapped out old banger!
A bashed and knackered fiat panda
A red one (obviously a male!)
An old Volvo with a broken suspension and one flat tyre.
A bubble car! Small and round with no power but very manoeuverable.
Jaguar E type. We are roughly the same age, both have a great engine but the chassis and running gear is constantly in the workshop

cat, owned by me - talk about life of Riley!
Pelican because I have a big mouth
A  bird to watch all the nutters running races in the winter!
an owl! Nocturnal - no need to get up early, very wise & able to turn their head 180 degrees!
Saturday/Sunday long runs

There is a closed facebook group Saltaire Marathon And Long Run Friends for people who are interested in doing some longer runs during the winter at a steady pace.  The runs are arranged via the group on an ad-hoc basis.  If interested please ask to join the group.
Committee meetings

The next committee meeting will be held on 5th June - if you have anything which you wish to be discussed please contact or speak to any member of the committee.

April Strider of the Month
Stewart Spink - Stewart set himself a target of a sub 3 hour marathon a few years ago. It was a lot quicker than he was running at the time and most of his club mates doubted that he could do it. But Stewart was determined and believed in himself. When he got down to 3:15 he seemed to hit a barrier and for a couple of years only chipped away a few seconds at a time. Each time things didn’t work out he tried even harder and came back with a different training approach. In 2018 he made massive progress and got down to 3:06. However those final 6 minutes would take some doing. On 28/04 Stewart achieved his holy grail. A mad sprint to the line saw him clock 2:59:58 and achieve his dream a hard earned sub 3HR @ London. What an achievement.
