April featured race - Guiseley Gallop

The Guiseley Gallop is held every year on Easter Sunday and is an approx. 10km trail race.  The race registration/parking is at the West Side retail park in Guiseley (McDonalds/Argos) and you can usually enter on the day but to guarantee your entry enter online at Bookitzone.

Toilet facilities are limited (McDonalds) and the start is a good 5 minute walk from the retail park.  The start is on a narrow muddy path in the woods and is a fast downhill charge down the rocky path. After a run through the woods the course heads back towards Esholt and includes a short road section on the old filter beds road.  There is then a good climb up through the woods, round a flat loop on the top and then steep muddy downhill to the end of the lap,  Now head downhill again on lap 2.  At the end of the second lap the route heads back towards the retail park via a muddy climb and finishes over the railway bridge and on the road at the back of Argos where you can collect your bottle of beer or miniature bottle of wine.

The race is a club championship race.
Club Trip Reims 2019
Date : Sunday 20th October
Distances : Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k

Race registration opens on 2nd April.  Not sure how quickly the events sell out, so it might be worth while entering sooner rather than later.

There is a template for the required medical certificate on the Run In Reims website.  If you would like to complete and upload this as part of your registration, and want Alun (Griffiths) to sign for you, then please print it, complete it, and see Alun on a club night.  If you don’t get it done straight away don’t worry, you can always add it post registration.   Completion of the certificate is your responsibility.

For full details see the January newsletter.

If you already know that you will be joining the trip, or have any questions  then please e-mail Lindsey Pearson

First Monday of the Month non-stop out and back runs

A good, enthusiastic, group turned up for the April 1st Monday of the month non-stop out and back run.

The out and back run is nothing to be scared of and it's as slow or fast as you want it to be.  It might be a little boring out and back but that's the best way the run leaders can manage the run with people running at different paces.

Somenone commented in the members survey that people just wanted to run on a Monday, well that's exactly what it is - the only difference to any other Monday is that instead of stopping every 5-10 minutes you keep running for 40 minutes which you'll need to do (and more) if you are wanting to do a 10k.

Someone also commented that there were no run leaders for the out and back run - I can reassure you that there are run leaders and they are watching out for your welfare - especially on the run back when they will be checking on anyone they are catching up and making sure you are enjoying your run.

For less experienced runners it is a chance to get familiar with pace judgement and pacing yourself, there's no good in running out at 12 minute miling and then having to come back at 15 minute miling you should be trying to come back in the same 20 minutes as you went out and if you come back a fraction quicker even better.

If you are looking to improve your running, the monthly out and back run is a good opportunity to check your progress - are you going a bit further each month or just feeling more comfortable running the 40 minutes from the previous  month.

If you do happen to run with another group on the 1st Monday from a different location (e.g from The Hop)  - WHY WOULD YOU - you might want to consider the benefits of the non-stop run once a month.

Someone else mentioned in the members survey they would like to know when the out and back runs were - it's quite simple they are the first Monday of each month i.e.

Monday 6th May
Monday 3rd June
Monday 1st July
Monday 5th August
Monday 2nd Sept
.
Saturday/Sunday long runs

There is a closed facebook group Saltaire Marathon And Long Run Friends for people who are interested in doing some longer runs during the winter at a steady pace.  The runs are arranged via the group on an ad-hoc basis.  If interested please ask to join the group.
Committee meetings

The next committee meeting will be held on 24th April - if you have anything which you wish to be discussed please contact or speak to any member of the committee.

February Strider of the Month
Lee East - consistent hard training has resulted in PBs at parkrun (Lister), 10k (Dewsbury) and knocked over 5 minutes off is half marathon best at the very tough, hilly Liversedge. All this whilst taking on some big hills and long miles in training for the Spen 20 and dealing every day with a number of health problems, which makes these achievements extra special. Well done Lee!
