Ladies book club 17th Nov.

Hello ladies, the next book club meeting will be at Don't Tell Titus at 7.30 pm on Friday 17 November. Date carefully chosen not to clash with Abbey Dash, Guy Fawkes 10 or the first PECO. Even though the races are on the Sunday, the two day hangover is a real thing.

We have two books. The first is Cartes Postales from Greece by Victoria Hislop, suggested by Mel earlier this year. A woman received mystery postcards from, yes, Greece at her London flat. Who can they be from?? It's a mystery all right. The book is in Asda for £3.50 and in Sainsbos or Tesco for £3.99.

The second book is Holding by Graham Norton, suggested by Lindsey. It is a 'gentle' detective novel set in a small town in county Cork. It might be a bit twee, it might be fab, who knows? Only one way of finding out. This is the lightweight book. It's in paperback but no supermarket sightings yet.

As ever, you can read both, either or neither (if the latter, just come for the wine. The book chat is strictly limited).

You might say, but that's only five weeks off and I can't possibly read two books in that time, now you are being unreasonable in your literary demands. I respond as follows: no guts no glory. That's what I say to Farquhar and Kerry when I make them come on runs with me through puddles full of cow poo (footpath between Guiseley and Menston that comes out by St Mary's school, if interested).

See you there

Helen Pennington

AGM

The 2017 AGM will be held on Thursday 7th December at Caroline Street Social Club. The club run for that night will be from Caroline Street rather than Nuffield - in past years, this has been a set time out-and-back on the road to Bingley. All  Striders are encouraged to attend the AGM - a fantastic buffet will be provided and we have the largest room at the Social Club this year!

Christmas meal
This year's Christmas meal will be in the private function suite at The Aagrah, Shipley. This will take place on the evening of Saturday 16th December and will likely feature a beverage or two at Fanny's Ale House post-meal. More details will follow in due course.

Pie & Peas
The thoroughly ridiculous Strava-art, Christmas jumper and pie & peas night will take place on Thursday 21st December. Last year featured a wonky reindeer and an inappropriate snowman. A really fun night with pie & peas provided by the club and a chance to have a final run and drink together before Christmas. Again, more details will follow in due course.

Remember, every single one of you is a member of this running club. As such, you are all encouraged to attend any/all of the events! We hope to see lots of our newer runners joining the longer standing members to celebrate together during the festive period. We are all Saltaire Striders!
Away Runs

The last Tuesday of each month will continue to be an Away run from Esholt, with drinks afterwards in the Woolpack.
England Age Group Masters meet Marathon Challenge

England Age Group Masters runners demonstrated that age really is no barrier to performance as they took on the MBNA Chester Marathon in style. Sporting the specially designed retro-style England Age Group Masters kit the 150 strong team of men and women representing England in the age groups V35 through to V75 took on the 26.2 mile race, with the added challenge of competing against a Celtic Nations team of runners and a strong field of club runners of all ages.

The organizers of the MBNA Chester Marathon were the perfect hosts making this a special day for many of these dedicated club runners.

This new initiative launched by England Athletics last autumn aims to recognize and reward the performances of the age group runners who make up a sizeable proportion of many a club membership. England Athletics are looking to further develop similar opportunities at other distances that will also add to the existing opportunities offered through the British Masters Athletics Federation.

Runners were invited to pre-register their interest to run in one of the five qualifying races, with the top five men and top 5 women in each age group at each race gaining automatic qualification for the team. Sunday was the culmination of several months of training with the whole team coming together at Chester in this inaugural event. Proud friends and family members were there to support on this special day where old rivalries were revived and new friendships made.

Conditions were near perfect for marathon running. Martin Fillingham finsihed 75th (10th V45) in 2:51:55 with Stuart Dunbar hot on his heels finishing in 86th place (2nd V55) in 2:53:06.

John Carr 5k charity donations

£800 was donated to the Bradford Hospitals Childrens Charity.
6 striders went along to the new unit at the BRI to present the cheque and see how the money will be used.

Great to show my Saltaire striders friends around the new children’s wards at BRI. The club have made several donations from the John Carr Race series and individual runners sponsored runs.

It has made such a difference. Thanks guys Simon Frazer

It has now been confirmed that there will only be 6 races in this years grand prix the final race is

12th November - Cleckheaton

Details
September Strider of the Month
Will Kerr - foremost in recognition of his captaincy and belief that SS could finally win the LCW relay, for which he again put in a lot of effort arranging the evolving team and then ran the opening leg to put the team in early strong contention. He was then out at several points along the 64 mile course supporting and updating other team members as well as negotiating with race officials, staying for the presentation at the end of a long day.

For good measure, within 7 days he was leading SS home with another solid/superb 75 minute half marathon at the Vale Of York.

Mid month Will lead the men's northern 6 stage team at Manchester despite being laid low with a fever days before and then chasing up with officials to secure the team's reinstatement after their administrative mix up.
Club Championship 2017

Only 2 races left in this years championship .  Next up is the  Abbey Dash 10k or Guy Fawkes 10m.
