Baildon 'No Watch' race

Baildon Runners have invited us to take part in their 'no watch' race on Thursday 14th September from the rugby ground on Jenny Lane.  There will be a short and longer route and food and drinks in the club house afterwards.

For the newer members and those that haven't done it before.  They reavel the 2 routes on the night with map and distance and you have to Carefully calculate guess your predicted finishing time for your chosen route - the routes are normally about 4 and 7 miles..  The winner is not the first person across the finishing line but the person whose actual time is closest to their predicted time but you can't wear a watch hence 'no watch' race.
Away Runs

The last Tuesday of each month will continue to be an Away run from Esholt, with drinks afterwards in the Woolpack.
Esholt Relays
We once again hosted the Esholt relays with our neughbours Baildon Runners at the Woolpack.  It was a close battle at the front, Graham Corbett got the Striders off to a good start with a 25 second lead at the end of stage 1.  At the end of stage 2 it was neck and neck with just 1 second separating us and Baildon.  Matt Nowell stretched out a lead on leg 3 but it wasn't enough to see us home.  On leg 4 Andy Brown set off with a slender lead but pushed Mike Malyon all the way to a new course record but we lost out by 10 seconds.

We had some issues with the local youths moving the direction signs and Trish Craven went off piste on her leg but was later re-united with her team mates and phone.  We underestimated the popularity but hopefully everyone manged to get some food afterwards and enjoyed the post race drinks and banter.

3 Peaks charity event for One in a Million

The day started early with a 4:30 am wake up alarm. We arrived on time for registration and had plenty of time to chat with some of the other runners  walkers including Wayne Jacobs  (the founder of OIAM and Bradford city legend) and his son Ben. We were told about the health and safety risks by the guide (Phil Lee) who duly gave us a pac-a-mac type poncho in case of emergency…After a brief photo-shoot in our charity T-shirts we were given a brief motivational talk by Wayne and another H&S talking to by Phil. The weather looked reasonable from the relative safety of Horton in Ribblesdale but things soon change once you get above 1000ft especially at the end of July !

After another brief toilet stop we started on the route and promptly took a wrong turn up a side road. The start of the ascent of Pen-Y Ghent meant we were soon warmed up and Matt discarded his top layer. As we progressed up the lower slopes we passed more walkers who mostly greeted us with a surprised ‘hellos’ etc. The path became more of a rock climb and our pace slowed from the initial 7min/mile. By the time we reached the summit the wind was blowing us around a lot and we started to descend quite quickly. The path turned from hard stone steps into a nice soft layer of quarry waste and we were soon out of the worst of the weather and there was even a glimpse of sunshine in the valley below.

We worked our way back up to the road and were greeted by Craig at the T-junction near Ribble head viaduct. We didn’t stop and worked our way up the lower slopes of Whernside and once again the weather deteriorated. I stopped only briefly to tighten my laces as I was feeling my feet move around a bit and the onset of blisters. I also took a bit of a dive on the way up and narrowly missed kissing some rocks. The ascent dragged on but eventually we hit the top and stopped only briefly for a windswept photo and to down another gel. The descent was tricky after an initial easier section and Matt was pulling ahead of me so I had to make up some ground here.

The distinctive silhouette of Ingleborough beckoned and we pressed on through the lower slopes in the face of a near vertical ascent. It was a bit like climbing up a waterfall but eventually we reached the summit. Matt beckoned me over to the final trig point of the day in very poor visibility conditions. We then tracked down towards the final leg. The paths were initially quite good but soon came the limestone pavement with super slippery conditions… it was time for the comedy run.

We approached the final two crests with the clock ticking towards the 4 hour target and we sped over the last few fields to reach the starting point with just 2 seconds over the 4 hour limit achieved. Matt then did a closing warm down loop but my heels were in too much pain and I went off to try and clean some mud off before the journey home.  It was here I noticed I had lost a layer of skin from both heels and had to tip toe back to the car.

Two years almost to the day from the last striders trip to the 3 peaks you could hardly imagine such different conditions but after all this was no fun run in the sun and it was OK to have to suffer a bit for a good cause. All in all it was a successful day and we have easily met our £250 fundraising target- many thanks to those who have already donated and don’t worry it’s not to late you can still give online or in person.

Details
June Strider of the Month

BARNEY LERNER - Barney seems to have been racing everywhere and anywhere in June & has certainly made the most of his recent elevation into the MV65 category. His hard training in recent months led to some great results in June: 1st MV65 at the Otley 10m race, 2nd MV60 at Rush around the Rhubarb, 2nd MV65 at the Solstice Saunter and some other good performances earlier in the month at the vets race in Whitby and the ABC.
July Strider of the Month

Louise Dell'Amico - For her selflessness in the Arthur James ShakERR. Louise stopped to help and look after a lady who had a nasty fall during the race. She stayed with the lady until the ambulance came, so sacrificed her own race time. Running isn't just about great results, it's also about supporting and helping your fellow runners.
