Striders go Karting

18 Striders and friends turned out at the Chequered flag indoor karting track in Guiseley.  We were divided into groups of 6 and had 3 sessions per group of 7 laps.  After the preliminaries the groups were re-arranged by fastest times for the semi finals  and then the fastest 6 making the grand final.

Stewart Spink was in pole position for the final and lead from start to finish despite a strong challemge from Gareth Ward.  Hannah Oldroyd represented the ladies well and finished 3rd.

Thanks to Gareth for organising a great outing, look forward to the next one.

World 50k championships - Doha

The second IAU 50km World Championships in the Qatar capital of Doha on Friday (November 11) was a resounding success for the Great Britain teams, as the women gained gold medals and the men secured silver behind USA. The women’s race turned out to be an exciting affair. Run in conjunction with the men’s event on an evening of 27°C with a relative humidity of 45% when the race got underway, it was difficult for the GB team managers, Walter Hill and David Lowes, to know exactly what was needed going into the final few circuits. In a race won by Kenya’s Risper Kimaiyo in 3:22:45, Britain’s Amy Clements ran a stellar race throughout to clock 3:26:17 for third. The Briton was up to second with a lap remaining and although faltering slightly on that circuit which allowed a resurgent Nele Alder-Baerens of Germany to nudge past, it was a meritorious performance to secure a bronze medal that set up the team for their crowning glory. She said: “The race was relentless physically and mentally to be honest, I felt good and think I paced it pretty well. My expectations coming into the race were slightly unclear, but this has given me great confidence for future races and I’m really happy to get on the podium.” In fifth was Rebecca Hilland, who clocked 3:34:08 after a tough experience over the second half of the course with stomach problems and dizziness. Samantha Amend completed the team scoring with her seventh place finish of 3:35:36, while Hannah Oldroyd clocked 3:35:57 for eighth having ran conservatively for most of the race but finishing strongly.
Well done Hannah!

October Strider of the Month

Louise Nash -  Following on from weeks of tough (to the point of tears!) training, in her debut marathon at Chester, Louise, with a 3:44:39 time, not only demolished the 4hr barrier but also smashed way past the F45 good for age and put in a time which would have qualified for the England team. On a roll, she has now PB'd 3 times in consecutive weeks, beating her all-time Parkrun PB each time, and dropping her Skipton PB by a over a minute. She is another example of what can be achieved by training properly and like a good wine Louise is improving with age. Louise is a really good supportive club member who regularly leads training sessions and has been a fantastic Ladies Vet captain and a real asset to the club.
The Pecos have arrived

On a perfect morning for cross-country 21 Ladies and 30 men striders completed the first Peco race at Temple Newsam. A total of 876 runners completed the 2 races (381 ladies and 495 men).  The highlight of the meeting was a superb 3rd place from recent recruit Rachel Boyd.

The ladies finished 4th team and won the vets league. The men finished 5ht and 7th in the vets league.

Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix Series 2016

Louise Nash acting ladies vets captain reports ...

Well well, what a SUPERB end to the Yorkshire Vets 2016 season!

Great turnout for this final race and we Saltaire Striders did ourselves proud!

Excellent debut performances today from Graham Terry and Mo Mistry, hope you'll be back for more next year!

Performances worthy of note from Bernadette Bowden for throwing up and carrying on (Little Miss Trooper), Gary Western for running in Gary P's road shoes cos he left his pump bag at home (Mr Forgetful), Mel Akeroyd for driving all the way from Brid (Little Miss Exotic), Helen Brant for making an appearance despite being coldy (Little Miss Snotty) - not forgetting our 6 prizewinners (mostly wine) (hic!) today:

Will Kerr 2nd M40
Alistair Nash 3rd M45
Stuart Dunbar 3rd M55
Louise Nash 3rd F45
Helen Love 3rd F55
Sylvia Ross 3rd F65

As for the overall standings at the end of the season: there are 3 tables: "all to count", "best 4 to count" and "rest to count."

Ladies: 3rd in all tables
Gents: 4th in all tables

Astounding! In total 46 Striders contributed to this fabulous run. Whether you did just one race or all eight, whether you were first or last - you scored us points which contributed to these amazing results so thank you so so much!

End of season trophies for the whole league go to:
Alistair Nash 1st M45
Stuart Dunbar 2nd M50
Helen Love 3rd F55

Well done, these are great results in a tough league!

Finally, and most importantly, special thanks to Martin Love and Kirstie Holmes for rebooting the Saltaire Striders chapter of YVAA.

Saltaire Striders you rock!
