7th August - Cross
Bay challenge half marathon - Some
striders have already signed up for this, why not
join us as we cross sea, sand and counties for the
11th Annual Cross Bay Challenge!
The run is a half
marathon across the shifting sands of Morecambe
Bay. This year the race will be returning to the
original point to point challenge that will take
you on an adventure right across Morecambe
Bay. You will leave the shore at Hest Bank
running towards Ulverston, crossing from
Lancashire to Cumbria before arriving at the
Flookburgh foreshore.
Due to the unique
terrain of the Bay we cannot guarantee the exact
distance. However we will, as usual, endeavour to
get as close to the 13.1 miles as we possibly can!
The final route will be set as soon as the tide
departs the shore on the day of the challenge. Our
experienced Bay Guides will guide you across the
Bay following a safe route but obviously allowing
some adventures on the way. In other words we want
you to get wet... very wet!
A bus has been
booked which will drop us off at the start and
collect us at the finish and then go somewhere for
food and drink and then return home.

Northern 12 stage road relay -
Sunderland 2nd April
SALTAIRE
Striders qualified for the National Road Relay
Championships at Sutton Park on 16th April
beating local rivals Keighley & Craven and
Bingley Harriers in the process.
The NORTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS at Sunderland
acted as the qualifier, and the Saltaire club's 24th-place
finish in 3hr 14min 8sec was just within the
limit for Birmingham.
This was the first time the club had entered
the championships for 15 years, and was the
first time since changing their name from St
Bede's.
Marcin Szoska took time off marathon training
to lead off on leg 1 with the fastest Saltaire
long leg, and his 32nd-place handover indicated
the quality of the top teams.
After the first seven stages, when the four
long legs had been completed Will Kerr handed
over, in 31st position.
Short legs by James Goodall and Joe Graham
were followed by a superb tenth stage by Pete
Hopson, whose 11min 39sec took the club up to
27th place.
Matt Richardson consolidated on the
penultimate leg before Martin Fillingham on the
last leg passed Jarrow, Kendal and, finally, Keighley & Craven in the
final mile to clinch the final spot for the
Nationals..

Strider of the
Month
The nominations for
the March Strider of the Month
are:
GARY PENNINGTON -
Gary's amazing run of form continued in March with
a stunning PB of 1:45:28 (a PB by around 4
minutes) in the Cardiff Half
Marathon.
GRAHAM CORBETT -
Graham enjoyed another fantastic month in March
finishing 17th in the Spen 20 (2:22:02) and then
running a 1/2 marathon PB in Cardiff of
1:19:35.
VICKI HUSSAIN -
Vicki's distance running continued in March when
she completed her second and longest to date Ultra
Marathon race - the 40 mile (actually nearer 42
mile) Red Rose Ultra (with 6,000 feet of climb) in
a time of 10 hours 54
minutes.
HANNAH OLDROYD -
After rejoining the club in January Hannah enjoyed
an excellent run of results in March. She started
the month by being 1st lady in the Anglesey 1/2
marathon in 1:21:27 and was then 4th lady in the
Thirsk 10k the following week in 60:50. She was
then 1st lady in the Spen 20 (2:12:30) and the
Salford 10k (36:37) and finished the month by
finishing 1st lady in the British 50k championship
(3:36:33) where she set a Scottish All Comers
record for the distance.
EMMA
CARTLEDGE - In March Emma completed the
Cardiff 1/2 marathon in a time of 1:41:12, which
was an amazing time given that it was her first
race back after a serious injury and being on
crutches for 2 months in the autumn. To go within
3 minutes of a PB so early in her comeback was a
brilliant achievement.
ALI NASH
- Another Strider to complete his longest
Ultra Marathon to date in March, Ali completed the
46.6 mile Canalathon in a time of 7 hours 10
minutes. He finished in 4th place and won his age
category.

the survey to indicate your
availability to help.
Don't worry if you haven't done it before,
it's not difficult and full instructions will be
given where necessary.
In order that we can plan and allocate roles
in good time, can you complete the survey by the

A big fat well done to our regular
#tracktuesday tracksters, all of whom are
getting faster and putting in some great
performances!
In recent weeks, Chris Stott and Alun
Griffiths had 2 10k PBs in quick succession,
with Alun knocking 4 whole minutes off his
previous fastest time. And Chris Jones has
produced PBs at both half marathon and 5k
distance, going sub 20 at Bradford Park Run.
There are loads more examples of great
improvements in speed and performance at all
distances, from 5k to ultra. Including interval
sessions in your weekly training will help you
to get faster and stronger – we see it time and
time again. Our interval sessions at Keighley
track every other Tuesday are attended by ladies
and gents of all abilities and we always tailor
sessions to meet the needs of everyone who comes
along. It costs £2 to use the track. These
sessions are separate from the Brian Scobie
Wednesday sessions.
Tuesday 5 April saw the start of the
Spring/Summer #tracktuesday schedule. We’re
focusing on speed on the run-up to the John
Carrs in May and then will be building in some
speed-endurance ready for longer distances in
late Summer/Autumn eg Vale of York HM and
Yorkshireman (or half) in September.
Any queries re track get in touch with Ali
Nash, Louise Nash or Chris Jones.

Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix
Series 2016
The start of
the new season of Yorkshire Vets races is just 2
weeks away with the first race at Honley on 24th
April.
The Grand Prix
is a series of 10 races spread over the year and
the county in which runners accumulate points for
both individual awards (based on your best 7
races) and for the club. The races are generally
about 5 miles long, on a variety of terrain, and
suitable for absolutely all abilities. The only
restriction is that you have to have reached the
grand old age of 35 in order to compete. Each race
costs just £5 to enter and as well as the
season-long awards there are prizes at each
individual race and lots of spot prizes
too.
If you want any
more info, please ask one of your Vets Captains
(Louise Nash & Martin Love) at training. We
will send round reminders closer to each race and
arrange car-shares wherever
possible. | |
Away
runs
Last year we had away
runs from Addingham, from Guiseley round the
Chevin chase course and the run back from
Ilkley.
The first Away run this year will
be on Thursday 26th May meeting in the car-park at
Ogden Water near Denholme. There will
probably be 3 different runs distances and all
runs are social runs and hopefully we can find
somewhere to have a drink and some food
afterwards.
If you have any suggestions for
venues for future away runs then just get in
touch. The venue needs to be within
reasonable travelling distance to allow people to
get there after work. |
